Fiber glass Mid for racing
I have been working on this Mid for about two months now and it's going to be raced at the US Vintage Offroad Nationals in september. Really looking forward to travel across the pond and meet other like-minded nerds.
Here are some pictures of the build so far which includes:
- Team A&L steering
- My own custom made chassis, towers, top deck etc.
- Double rear towers with rear mounted shocks.
- Alcyon's OT-85 delrin gear
- Hobbywing XERUN 120A v2.1
- Hobbywing XERUN 10.5T
- Savöx 1251MG Low Profile Servo
- Gear diffs
- B44.2 LiPo holders (direct fit on Optima Mid, Lazer ZX, ZXR)
- What wheels and tires I'm going to use are still not decided.
- Marwan's Turbo Optima Mid Special body with wing and undertray. Not yet trimmed/painted/mounted.
- Turnigy nano-tech saddle pack LiPos
I hope you like it! More images to come...

Re: Fiber glass Mid for racing
Thanks. The rules allows for making mods that was typical for that time. John Gudvangen made white glass fiber parts for both SWB and LWB mids.bearrickster wrote:looks really cool but if your just building it will it make the pre94 cut off??

Looks nice so far, Joel. Why the double rear shock towers, is that for strength?

Re: Fiber glass Mid for racing
The front one is in the original position and has the body mount. The rear one is for mounting the shocks behind the wishbones. I just connected them for strength as you guessed.Coelacanth wrote:Looks nice so far, Joel. Why the double rear shock towers, is that for strength?

I really don´t like it - and it doesn´t look freakin´ cool at all. Not even the battery straps.
But You really should give barbie her wheels back

Re: Fiber glass Mid for racing
If the body eventually gets painted with some pink accents, those wheels will be perfect.
With the double rear shock towers, you'll have to cut the rear part of the Lexan body a bit differently, though.

Re: Fiber glass Mid for racing
Barbie will get them back. They is just for show. I will probably use some 2.2 wheels/tires as that give me the option to choose good wheels for the particular track surface. Like Proline Holeshots/Double Dees. The only problem is to find front wheels with correct offset.DennisM wrote:I really don´t like it - and it doesn´t look freakin´ cool at all. Correct, and there are pink versions of these wheels too.kink wrote:I think it is cool.
Besides that is magenta, not pink.
Yes, the bodies will be trimmed differently but they are reproductions anyway. If I manage to trim the body just to swallow the towers it will be held in place better as a bonusCoelacanth wrote:If the body eventually gets painted with some pink accents, those wheels will be perfect.

I have not yet decided what wing mount to use. I could make one in fiber glass but I'm not sure I want a stiff wing mount. A stock plastic fantastic one will flex and may actually save a wing or two.

Re: Fiber glass Mid for racing
Sounds good, Joel...I mentioned it because I remember trimming the body for my Optima Mid and having to cut little thin notches just for the shock towers, as opposed to the much larger, easier-to-cut rounded openings that the Optima/Turbo Optima series have.

Very nice indeed as always.
Thanks for the tip on the B44.2 battery cradles. I never thought of that for my Mid runners.

Re: Fiber glass Mid for racing
Very nicely done, Joel...with a 10.5T and 120A ESC, that thing's going to be a beast on the track.
