Diagonal battery - any good reason?

I have now gotten 2 old RC10s with the battery cups mounted diagonally in the tub, and have seen pictures of others like it before. Is this really a "thing"? Or is it just a way to fit bigger packs that someone came up with and a bunch of people copied? I would think that the balance would be horrible, unless maybe it helps pre-load it for oval racing or something. Anyone know when or why this got started?

Was what a driver did and was in the magazine.I bought an rc10ce off ebay that a kid hacked tryn to do the diagonal battery mounting the car was brandnew and never got used he screwed it up so bad.Still have the chassis tub don

Could be some kind of laziness. I did it to my GT years ago just for testing purposes because I didn't want to drill any new holes in the chassis and some just happened to be there already that would work...

These were taped in, not screwed (and thankfully not with any extra holes drilled, at least not for that). And I don't have any photos because I already yanked them out. I was just wondering if there was a reason for it. If it's something that was in a magazine, and got copied, that makes sense. But I think I'll keep my packs at right angles.

As far as why..Can't answer that one from experience. Got a local guy that used to run with us and he had all of his set across the pan like you are asking about. The local said he liked how it jumped this way. It was easier for him to control and made more room for his bigger servo and battery. I think it was just the way this guy liked it. I would think it would be twitchier in the air this way but that is just a guess on my part. Most of the time you want the majority of the weight closest to the center down the middle of the car front to back. I've seen others run the battery diagonally over the years but not competitively.

From the November 1989 RC Car Action. This was a sprint car conversion, so I assume the angled battery pack was for weight transfer.
