Re: 1st Build Thread
Solid execution you did there. Looks great. It's better in person though, I'm sure. Did you polish the wheels after the sand down, or apply a clear coat of some sort? Pretty rad 1st build thread.

Re: 1st Build Thread
After sanding down to a super-fine grit, I tried multiple polishing / buffing compounds and techniques, and I got no love getting a semi-shine like on new wheels - at least not without some scorching from the heat produced. I finally had to go with a hard poly coating for plastics, and multiple sandings / resprays until I got the finish I was looking for - not too dull, not too glossy. I wanted to get there by buffing and polishing only, but didn't happen. Kinda disappointed - feels like cheating, but the result was nice.

Re: 1st Build Thread
I'll keep looking for the right buffing compound and/or tool, and when I find the right technique, I'll go back and redo the wheels without the poly coat, assuming that I haven't replaced them already at that point with NOS wheels. Always up for learning new stuff! ![Smile :)](./images/smilies/icon_smile.gif)

Made a quick and dirty body template to help decide what paint I'm going with. I suspect it was merely a subconscious tactic to delay making up my mind...

This B2 is turning out great. Good job!R Cane wrote:Made a quick and dirty body template to help decide what paint I'm going with. I suspect it was merely a subconscious tactic to delay making up my mind...
I've done the same with the Mirage SS body for the NIX91 build. It helps quite a lot, but I have still not found the right color scheme

Re: 1st Build Thread
I think it's the hardest part of the build...it's the most obvious thing on there. If it isn't right, it ruins the whole look of the car. It doesn't help that I want to do something unconventional either...

Re: 1st Build Thread
Trying to get the body painted. Well...I've been an amateur artist for almost 30 years, so I thought I could do ok with this...but I've now found out I totally SUCK at cutting straight lines and nice curves in masking. This ain't helping me any. ![Confused :?](./images/smilies/icon_confused.gif)

Re: 1st Build Thread
Ok, more progress. I replaced all 4 wheels with NOS originals, added the correct Pro-86 rear tires (thanks David!), and added just a little more purple hardware bling (thanks Jeff!).
All I have left on the chassis is finding a correct carbon top plate. I just sat down to take off the B3 carbon plate that's on there now and put on a new composite B2 plate - so it would at least be period correct in the meantime...and I see the NOS composite plate I bought is actually the B3 version with the extra swaybar holes - even though it was in the (I thought) correct B2 packaging. So either it had been repackaged, or they later sold that part with a B2 only header card, and I didn't realize it. Guess I need to pay better attention... So, off to buy another temporary composite top plate.
And of course, try not to screw up the body paint...
