Saving your ESC from voltage spikes.

Post by mAdMan »

Some systems like Castle offer data logging and throttle curve adjustment, also the MT-4 radio can load parabolic curves.

I have recognized the temperature drop when using a throttle curve. The curve that seems to drop the voltage ripple by over 60% is a gradual curve that enters into the throttle slower and spikes quickly through the 50% throttle mark.

Why is this? Basically I have reduced the amount of time the ESC sees the on off pulse. At 50% throttle your ESC is on 50% and off 50%. This off time, while very short, causes a lot of built up heat and large voltage spikes (or ripples) during the pulse width on off process.

When you drag your throttle curve to the right at around the 30% area you are making the 0-30% throttle drawn out and allowing it to rocket past the 50% mark faster, which in turn makes the PWM shorter and the heat built up in the capacitors less.

The result is less punch, but much more reliability...It works very well, give it a try.
