Yokomo MX-4 SSG Special

Hey everyone. It has been a while since I last posted on here with a build project and having been able to procure the parts needed for this Yokomo MX-4 Hybrid, I would like to share some of the parts used and build progress with you all. I was inspired by Cristian and his own Yokomo MR4-BC Special Hybrid build which can be seen here-

A superb build combining functionality and aesthetics which is something I always try to incorporate with my own builds.

My Hybrid SSG like Cristian’s is essentially a combination of the Yokomo MX-4, MR4-BC Special and MR4-TC Special. My project started as a Yokomo MX-4 which I had planned on adding some option parts but having every iteration of the MX-4 already, I felt this would be a little redundant so the idea to incorporate the SSG chassis originally designed as an option part for the MR4-TC Special became enticing. Having all the parts already to build the MX-4 made the project a little simpler and having Cristian's car as a blueprint of sorts helped as the chassis needed modifying to work with the Yokomo ZS-LWC Kit and MX-4 suspension arms. I wanted to use MIP Aluminium CVD's on all 4 corners (I have them in the rear only) but I also wanted to use the ZS-640T Front One-Way Assembly. The front MIP CVD's for the MX-4 I found are just a tad too long when used together with the one-way assembly and up-travel is limited because of this. Using the ZS-010FLB universal shafts solved this problem.

The SSG parts where fabricated (with the exception of the top deck, roll bar plate and battery brace which are OEM) by Paul Sims at http://bezerk.com.au/shop/. I cannot say enough good things about the quality and precision of this man's work. Apart from designing and machining all the parts, he performed all the little details like countersinking specified parts and milling the motor mount area and battery slots.First class service and highly recommended.

Thanks crusaderlyf2 (Yunfei?). I have the MX-4 SSG rear shock tower available but at the moment, I am leaning towards using the rear shock tower from the MR4-BC. We'll see.

Some progress. Mounted the battery and transponder posts onto the chassis and assembled the slipper clutch. The slipper clutch is quite a simple design and similar to the version on the MX-4.

Really nice to hear from you Yunfei. I am well and I trust you are also. I was just having a look at your fabulous Yokomo YMP MX-4 build. A beautiful collection of Team Suzuki parts to go along with the YMP conversion kit. To anyone who hasn't seen this rare build, here it is-

The assembly of the suspension components went together without any issues and I am quite happy with how it all looks. Fitment and tolerances of the Team Suzuki blue anodised parts is excellent.

Moving on to the front and rear bulkheads, and installing the drive train onto the chassis.

Made some progress mounting the front and rear bulkheads onto the chassis and installing the drivetrain. I forgot how compact the slipper clutch/one-way assembly and rear differential are but once installed onto the chassis, everything fits perfectly and is a testament to the design ability of Masaaki Hirosaka.

I have not seen any photos of the 'Sosidge' car but I would like to if you have any to share or can point me in the direction of where to find them. I am only guessing but Sosidge is a username? I have read many posts by a user that goes by the name Sosidge on Rctech.net and he is unbelievably knowledgeable with regard to RC but especially the Yokomo brand.

I encountered a small issue with regard to the centre layshaft and slipper clutch unit and it seems with the unique motor mount designed for the YMP touring car chassis, it is not possible to install the slipper clutch as the layshaft uses a different mounting position for the front drive pulley and subsequently pushes the front belt past the motor mount. Not ideal. I thought about drilling a new hole in chassis to accommodate the original MX-4 motor mount which solves the issue but I would lose a mounting/pick-up point on the topdeck which normally uses 2 screws to secure the motor mount. I have decided to revert back to the original one-way pulley that is specific for this chassis and will hopefully find a new home for the slipper clutch unit. I had to order some extra parts to complete this conversion so I will not be able to make any progress on this project for at least a few weeks especially considering all that is happening.

No worries. I remember he had his own webpage with plenty of information regarding his projects and set-ups for the Yokomo buggies. Nice guy to boot.
