How much torque does a 10t steering servo need?

So I am running my Rc10t with the turnigy 1258tg with a reported 13.5 kg of torque.

At a complete standstill on pavement the front wheels are challenged and don’t fully turn. When driving it seems fine.

Should the wheels freely, or fully, turn when on the ground? How do I tell if I have enough torque on the steering servo?

If the ratings of that servo are remotely close, it should be more than enough.

I'd check for bind in the bellcranks. Its easy to over-tighten them.

If you are using original 10T length bellcranks, the geometry on them is horrible. A set of buggy bellcranks, mounted in the foreword holes is much better. My runner truck has Worlds bellcranks on it.

And be careful when selecting a servo horn.

A longer horn gives the servo less effective torque. And you just end up dialing the endpoints way back to control travel.

Just for reference, I checked the steering on my Team Truck. It still uses the original steering.

With a Futaba S9304 (about 5kg), it had no issues turning while sitting still.


I also checked my runner truck with Worlds bellcranks and a Tower Pro MG-995 (about 11kg). It will easily snap the tires back and forth while sitting still.

Pop the ball cup off the servo horn and check for binding, check that the servo saver isn't too loose, then try the servo while the steering is disconnected. This should tell you where the problem is.

Sounds like I have a problem to look for.

The problem was the second servo saver I was using. I was using servo an older kimbrough servo saver instead of a servo horn. I swapped up to a standard piece of plastic and all is well now.

But it sounds like anywhere from 5-10 kg is going to be enough.

I think the old off brand servo wasn't even close to it's rated specs.
I just switched out to the servo from my buggy an official Savox 1258tg https://www.savoxusa.com/products/savsc1258tg-std-size-coreless-digitaland the difference in handling is night and day.
