No. I also never have heard but could ask my friend, next time I see him.

But I´m not sure if this could be really used at races or would be classified as outlaw.

Also I´m not sure if it works with standard armatures or if a longer armature axle would be needed.
And the hole for the bearings have to be 100% accurate, otherwise the bearings won´t be perfectly centered and would increase resistance/drag.

But I wonder why it is actually tech talk between us and no other guys involved.
I know there have been interest before. And Demon motors had been very popular in Europe.
So guys come on and post your motors and knowledge. Or questions.

I don't remember ever seeing or hearing about Demon motors in the USA back in the day. My first introduction to them was on this site. I grab them for my collection when I can, which has been a total of 3 so far. Two from the UK and one from Italy. I appreciate all the info about Demon motors and the ties to Mike Reedy are very interesting. That could have something to do with why they weren't common in the USA, so there wouldn't be competition between Demon and Reedy.

Same here. I am enjoying the thread and am quite amazed at the depth of knowledge. Unfortunately, I have absolutely nothing to add.

Demon used to sponsor a three-driver team from R&M Models, and he provided them with motors and ESC's. The team motors were stickered-up to advertise the shop and the names of the team drivers were etched on the cans (by one of the dads it transpires). I have one which belonged to Chris Boakes who has confirmed he ran this in competition. It is a 15Double.

When i had it rebuilt we were surprised to discover two bearings in the endbell. I quizzed Ian Diboll and Jamie about this and it was confirmed it was something Nick experimented with, along with using alloy windings instead of the typical copper. Glyn Ward of BRM also confirmed this idea was dabbled with by a few motor builders back in the day, including Mike Reedy. 'It is to stop angular movement around the balls on a single bearing'.....

It gave a typical output on the dyno - 30,000rpm, but the amp draw was slightly lower than i would expect at 2.4amps.

I do have a few other unusual Demon motor bits and bobs... the first being the aforementioned armature with aluminium windings. Jamie Booth lived with Nick for a while and told me it was during this time that Nick was experimenting with these. I received these in a Demon care package from a close friend of Nick's - in fact this guy used to travel to the Sagami factory with Nick fairly often and has sent me several pictures from their visits.

It is a 20 Single, and Glyn Ward has tested it for me following a quick skim and in the same can/timing setting against a copper-wound 20Single to see how they differ.

Both 0.9mm wire.

Copper 21,000rpm at 2.6amps
Alloy 18,500 rpm at 2.6amps

Temp after 5 minutes no load copper was 36.7 C and alloy was 45.4 C

An interesting comparison anyway... guess that is why they stuck with copper!

Included in the package I received was another shop collaboration - this time TQ Models, which again is just a Sagami-based Demon motor and endbell but with a lovely floro TQ Racing label. 18Triple. That gave 30,000rpm at 3.5amps.

The best bit though was a pair of unused silver (as opposed to the typical black) square-base holed Sagami cans and matching Demon endbells. I am presuming these must have been samples that were sent to Nick and never used. Nice to have anyway - i was thinking of building up the alloy armature into one of them. There were also quite a few wound and unwound armatures too.

I used Demon motors back in the 80's, I have about a dozen now. When I have time I will take some pics of the different variations I have & post them. All of mine have the 01 phone number apart from a 35T motor that has no phone number & gold coloured brush hoods.

Regarding the aluminium windings, I wonder why it was tested. To me it makes no sense.
Maybe it´s less weight but a faster spool up time don´t make much sense when traction level is low.

Also aluminium is a quite bad conductor. Also not that easy to wind because it´s more stiff and breaks easily.

There were other silver can motors made by Sagami. Not just the ones for Nick.
I don´t mean the can type which is known here as Sagami can.
Sagami actually made most of the basic teardowns for anyone.
Yokomo can ... made by Sagami.
HPI can ... made by Sagami.

Corally had some special Yokomo silver cans which were much better than the black ones. Talk of early 300 and 400 series, not the ones in the late 1990´s.
Maybe the same is true for your silver cans.
But of course there also had been bad or low quality silver cans.

Being a bit offtopic, but as we speak of Sagami there have been quite early motors made by Sagami as well.
Ii have early Mugen motors (which came with their 1/12 car), MRP rare earth mag motor, Simprop Contest motor. All of them early and quite unknown today but made by Sagami as well.

From what I gather Nick came up with the square base hole can design and got Sagami to make them for him, along with the Demon logo endbell - unique to his motors..... Then suddenly they appeared in use by a couple of other manufacturers (just the square-base hole cans)... i have a few MG's with them from the 1990 range, and of course the other well known example which shall not be named here, which i gather Nick wasn't best pleased about....
