Traxxas Wildcat

Post by Dangeruss »

On July 10th 1986 a little company that would eventually grow to become a juggernaut in the RC industry opened its doors and released its first model, a 1/10th 4wd electric off-road buggy dubbed, the Traxxas Wildcat. Imported from Tiawan and manufactured for Traxxas by Blue Bird Model Mfg. Co. Ltd. the Wildcat 4wd Racer was Blue Bird's version of a Tamiya Hotshot. Constructed primarily from injection molded ABS plastic the Wildcat used a monocoque chassis with transverse battery mount to encase the shaft driven 4wd system. Geared differentials front and rear sent power out through dog bone axles to a four-wheel independent suspension with lower a-arms and non-adjustable upper camber links. Dampening was provided by oil-filled coilover plastic shocks in either a monoshock front/twin shock rear or twin shock front/quad shock rear arrangement. The included electronics consisted of a two-step speed controller with reverse and a mid-mounted RS-540S sealed motor. A third Race Version was supplied with a modified motor and heavy-duty speed controller. All three kits came unassembled with plastic wheels, Star Light knobby rubber tires, bushings, and a clear lexan body:

Hands down one of the most playful RC ads ever printed.
