In 1984 Kyosho debuted their own line of LeMans brushed motors as an upgrade to the standard Mabuchi RS 540 motor. The LeMans series, a moniker inspired by the famed grand prix endurance race and French town after which the race is named, initially began with five modified motors but would grow to include thirty-eight different motors in total. Epoxy resin potted coils, diamond trued commutators, skewed armatures, stainless steel shafts, dual bearings and adjustable timing was common across the line but a number of motors would receive components specific to their intended use such as bushing, locked timing, aluminum end bells, wet magnets, as well as four different (550, 540, 480 & 180) can sizes. Unique to the original and many subsequent motors in the LeMans series however was Kyosho's model numbering. Rather than a wind count or arbitrary name/alphanumeric designation the motors were numbered based on the runtime in seconds achievable from a 1,200 mAh six cell 7.2v battery pack. Additionally, Kyosho would eventually revive the LeMans name for their new brushed and brushless motors lines.
