As far as I know, motors don't have thermal protection, just ESCs. But for arguments sake let's say the motor does have protection. (although I am 99.9% sure it doesn't) You are probably safer not letting it get to the point that it kicks in.

I think tsan's right. ESCs can detect overheating from a motor, provided it's a sensored ESC...but I don't think a motor can shut itself down when it overheats. I could be wrong. Nonetheless, I think running any motor within a hair of red-lining, then backing it off a notch, is a bad idea. The motor probably won't last long under those conditions.

To bring some answers to an old thread, and some of my own questions. Are the Turnigy and Gen Ace offerings comparable with the high dollar Venom batteries? I'm looking at one for sporting around, and one for racing. Currently both the Turnigy and Gen Ace are out of stock of the 50-60c ratings. Would the 40c be just fine for fooling around?
