Re: MIP LEGENDS RUNNER RESTO.** FINISHED AND RACING THIS WEEKEND

Post by RETRO R/C »

Ok guys, after much deliberation on whether this one was going to be a shelfer or not - I have decided that as I cant resist racing this it. So I have completely rebuilt her again ready for racing. I spent allot of time getting the transmission smooth and the suspension acting how it should. I am only going to run it in stock - as I really am not too keen on destroying it!!

Nothing too special in the running gear dept - with only mid level equipment used - with the exception of course of my trusty Futaba FAAST radio system.

I must admit to being really quite surprised at how effective the 4wd system is on the conversion - while only testing it on the street - I must say that the car handles extremely well - with long controlled on power drifting easily acheivable.........hmmmm - maybe I wont run my Optima Mid after all!! The track will be a different story though I am sure.

I did make a mod to the body before I painted it - I heated the lexan at the front of the car to make a "lump" to ensure that the front transmission does not hit the body - turned out pretty good.

Well - I have gone picture crazy for this one - I hope you like my MIP Legends runner for this coming weekends race meeting here in Australia for vintage cars.

I look forward to any questions or comments that you may have.

That's awesome Dazz, nice trick with the front bubble 8) so, what's your battery retaining system? Looks interesting! And is that a simple nut holding the rear wheels? I'm pretty anxious to read your impressions after the race and watch at some MIP action porn 8)

Thanks for the comments guys - much appreciated.

The rear wheels (like the front) are held on by the two screws. The nut secures the Yokomo wheel adapters.

I am really looking forward to driving this beast on the track. On the road - the thing was awesome! But the track will be a whole other matter. I think it will "push" a bit - That's better than power on snap oversteer though!

I am also running a Tamiya Wild One and a Frog, Wild Willy (original and II) and perhapss another one ortwo if Ican get the time to set them up.....going to be a busy weekend!

Cheers

I really like the setup of this car: all-business; just the right upgrades and nothing just for looks. Perfect.
I know the Mip conversion isn't the most effective 4wd system , but aside of an axle drive it is the cleanest system with those sealed gearboxes in front and rear.
I really learned to appreciate that after my optima-like 4wd ultima ate a lot of stones, killing all the gears inside the box.Theidea still scares me to run my YZ-10

Thanks mate - I could have gone all out with the mods - but that is for the new built one I am going to build one day.

As you say - this car is all business. Hopefully it will be reliable and I wont crash to often- as any parts breakages on this car will be very painfull to the wallet! Not to mention that the car is obviously pretty darned rare in any condition, I spent allot of time making things as smooth as possible - so it should be durable.

As for the Yoko's - mate - don't be afraid to run them - they are pretty good at spitting the stones straight back out again - I can honestly say that I very rarely had issues when running them - I did make sure though that the under-tray and body were a snug fit - often using foam sealing tape to ensure as nice a fit as possible.

I have done the same on the Optima mid I am running for this meeting as well, cant be too carefull.

Cheers

Well,

I ran the beast and have to say I was extremely impressed. The first time I drove it, we were at the scene of the 1989 World Title track - St Ives (here in Australia). I decided to run the car with original old school tyres and wheels - glad I did - as it gave a true feeling for what the car used to be like to drive. It was a little "tail happy" - however more than driveable. The video below is of the "LEGEND" on the first run on the track. I "guestimated" the set up - it was pretty close. The Legend jumped extremely well. A little on the under-steer side - but you would expect that - just meant I got to chuck it around more. These are the first laps that I ran - Literally - so you could call them "installation" laps :P ! I got more and more comfortable with the car over the next few batteries, so much so that when I fitted the modern tires - I fitted a mod motor for the meeting the next day (12 Quin). Sadly the motor was a bit much for the front wheel axles - I snapped 2 of them in half the next day......should have stuck with stock class motors for the car - as the metal just could not handle the power.

That being said - I loved driving it - I highly recommend running one of these treasures to anyone.

Heres the video of its first drive (using a stock motor) in over 15 years.......on the track that Eustace first used the belt conversion in anger. I was a little cautious at first - so forgive the sloppy lines! Jumps well doesn't it!

That car is sick in the air. It must have been an advantage on tracks with a lot of big jumps over normal 4wds.

I was there with Darryn on this day and his car is SUPERB! He's right about the old tyres,it was slidding everywhere but thats nothing the 'Dazzler' cant deal with. Im not sure its all the car though,Ive seen darryn beating the hell out of Lazer's and Optima Mid's in competition with an old Marui Samurai- What Im saying is he can drive and Im sure if you put any car under Darryn's care he'll do well with it.

Thanks so much for the comments guys!

Jeeeeez Jason! Thanks mate!

It is a shame that the video of the car running at the Ryde meeting (shown elsewhere on this site) with a modified in it is not clearer - as it really does show that this car was indeed a brilliant performer with modern tires and a modified motor..

I wont run it again in Mod though - just to hard on the older components. I will run her in stock though - as this thing will surely be a force to be reckoned with.

Just have to find some alternative driveshafts/wheel axles now - as I have used up my last set.

Big thanks to my new mate "Gazza" for the video efforts with my rubbish camera on this one too - thanks mate.

Cheers
