I had a little accident yesterday

Post by markt311 »

So I was helping my dad pour some concrete at his place yesterday. Like an idiot I went to set down a bucket of dry concrete mix a little too hard and I got a big puff of it in both of my eyes. I got it mostly flushed out and finished helping out while barely being able to see out of my left eye. I got home and after several hours decided to go to the emergency room, I don't go to the doctor very often and I usually just tough it out when I get hurt but the pain was so bad I decided to go.

So after 4 hours and getting my eyes numbed and inspected with a black light and dye it was determined I have a Corneal Abrasian, basically a bunch of scratches on my eyeball.

So now I have an eyepatch (ARRR) and I've been told to miss work for 3 days. Needless to say it really sucks and I thought I'd tell my family at rc10talk about it. The worst part of it all is it was my own stupid fault.

Bummer. Best wishes on a full recovery. I still have a scar in the white of one eye from stabbing myself with a screwdriver over 30 years ago. I remember holding my eye, scared to lift my hands away to inspect the damage, like it just happened. Fortunately it was OK as I missed anything real important.

Real men don’t need no stinkin’ safety glasses, eh? (what, no Blazing Saddles fans?)

Thanks guys, my eye feels a lot better today. Until I go out in the sun anyway. The good part is they say your eye heals itself really quickly, but I've never had a pain like this before.

I hope it does heal up quickly, I've got a big race out of town this weekend. If anyone is in the Owensboro KY area we are racing at REO raceway just across the river in Rockport Indiana this Saturday.

I have an appointment with an eye specialist tomorrow so I'll see what he thinks about being outside in the sun all day. I bet he tells me to stay home :(

It always hurts getting stuff in your eye. Hope it heals enough before the big race. If they say no direct sunlight then have somebody hold a large umbrella over you. :D

I recently had a bug fly into my eye while running, it must have been swimming on a bath of pollen cause it immediately stung like hell and was swollen for two days. Doc said it wasn't scratched, so I was lucky there.

Knowing how that felt, I imagine what you are going through ain't fun in the slightest, your's sounds much much more painful. Hope you feel better and make the race.

Sorry to hear about your eye. I've had a similar experience, but mine was with spray paint "silver". So this is what happened: I was in my backyard about to spray a hardbody with some basecoat silver when I noticed that the nozzle was glogged so bad that no paint came out. I decided that it would be a good Idea to use another nozzle off another can. So I remove old nozzle, insert new (but being a slightly different design it has a small slit in the bottom) as soon as I press it in a stream of silver paint squirts me right in the eye through taht small slit. talk about having a burning sensation in your eye. Now blind as a bat in broad daylight I open my door, opening the other eye hurt too, I crawl-feel my way to the bathroom (wife was nappin on the couch and I was afraid to wake her up) so I had to turn on the fauces and rinse like a champ still all blind"folded" it took me nearly 15 minuted of rinsing untill I could open my eye fully and it still burned for about 3 hours and was red for over 24. That sucked. I can imagine yours is a lot worse since you had concrete in there. Did it burn you? I know if you get it on your skin and dont wash it off immedietely it can burn you. Good luck ARRRRRRRR

Aw, suck it up, ya big baby!

I feel for ya man. I've had all kinds of debris flung into my eyes and none of it felt good! Thankfully, I've never had any damage and now that I'm older and wiser, I wear safety gear whenever doing things that would be prone to flinging things at me. Like you, I've had the fluke occasion when dust of some sort gets poofed up in my face. It's just something that happens.

I once had a co-worker that nearly got a flaming carbide saw blade tooth in the eye. He was 10' away from the guy cutting and saw it coming. It got him about 1/2" under his eye, VERY VERY lucky! The saw tooth just came off, there was no damage to the blade or metal debris in the material being cut at the time.

I wised up too.... just last week, picked up some prescription sports glasses with transitions lenses that I can use on the trial, on the run, or at work as safety glasses.

Yeah, I broke down a few years ago and got some prescription glasses as well and made sure they were "safety" rated. They're normal glasses though, without side shields, so I don't use them in situation where there's intentional flying debris such as using the grinder (full face shield for that) or running a string trimmer. I have plain old wrap around face huggers for that kind of thing.

I have to say though, I would not have been wearing glasses doing concrete like Mark was. sunglasses maybe, but not safety's, then I don't generally play with dry concrete mix, mine is usually coming out of a truck or hopper, that doesn't stop if from spitting in your face!

And my dad works for a local concrete company, but we were just doing a small sidewalk up to the front of his house. So we were just using his mixer that he has at the house. To add insult to injury (literally) I went out to my truck today and there's concrete splattered on the side of my pickup, and it wasn't parked anywhere near where we were working. I just have no luck lately.

I've decided not to push my luck and not race this weekend, I could use a break anyway.
