Not just another Blackfoot Build....

Post by CNA75 »

Moving on from my recent Fox build, I am now commencing my NIB Blackfoot build and thought. I am seeking to make the build a little unusual and bought pretty much every NIP hop-up that I have seen available. Also, the intention is for the finished product to be as bling as possible and with that in mind I have had the plastic parts chrome plated and have sourced many of the metal parts with gold anodizing. The theme will, therefore, be chrome and gold with a whole host of hop-ups including (but not limited to) the following (all parts are NIB/NIP):

1. Thorp/Robinson Telescope drive shafts with Thorp spur gear;
2. Trinity shocks;
3. CRP chassis stiffener;
4. Rear anti-roll bar;
5. Sees aluminium/gold anodized wheels;
6. Adjustable motor mounts;
7. JG rear shock mounts;
8. Lunsford Racing turnbuckles;

...and many, many, more.

As a taster, please see the pics below of a few of the chrome plated plastic parts and gold anodized metal parts..... :mrgreen:

You intend to open and use a NIB Blackfoot, but are using nearly all aftermarket parts? Just making sure I read that right. I'm wondering with such a large list of NIB aftermarket parts why you wouldn't just gather the few remaining stock pieces off ebay or wherever and just build it that way instead of leaving that nice new box with 60% of a Blackfoot left in it.

I remember an ad in RCCA with chromed blackfoot parts long before they became available from Tamiya. Along with those was a long list of option parts (mostly for the clodbuster though). I think the brand was ESP.
If I recall correctly it included a double wheel conversion too.
Dr. robotnik built his monsterbeetle with those... try a search in the tamiya section or scan archive

EDIT: in doubt: could have been a clodbuster wheel conversion for the blackfoot in that add... pretty sure actually

The name of the chromed parts company was CCP. You could get any Blackfoot/Clod/Lunchbox part that was plastic in chrome from them. I'm sure they did a few other models as well, but that's what I remember off the top of my head. Custom Chrome Products.

Partly right. I expect that after the build there will probably only be about 20-30% of the nib Blackfoot left. Nearly all the plastic parts will be used (and it is these which have been chrome plated). The hop-ups will mainly replace the gears, the shocks and other metal parts. Plus, to be honest, I don't go for the idea of keeping NIB kits unbuilt in their box. For me, they were made to be built and if you don't intend to sell them on (as I don't) then the pleasure for me comes from the build and the finished product...

You had the pieces from the kit chrome plated yourself? I assumed you had bought aftermarket chromed pieces.

Yes, I understand the company was CCP and occasionally some of their parts do come up on Ebay. However, the selection of parts is now very limited - I've only ever seen chrome roll bar and shock bodies and I wanted the whole lot to be chrome plated for maximum bling so I had to have them specially done by a specialist plastic plating company...

Did you have the gold anodizing done as well? I don't remember seeing any gold anodized Blackfoot parts before.

No. The gold anodized parts are parts which I have acquired from EBAY. There's a guy/company which sells these: http://myworld.ebay.com/rob101a/

I can recommend the quality of the anodizing if anyone is interested....

That build is going to turn out sweet. When I built my blingfoot, It took a long time to source all the CCP chrome parts. You got off easy by having them chromed.

Yes, I'm conscious of that although to be honest the plating on some of the parts didn't come out quite as well as I'd hoped so I will be continuing to look for the CCP parts where required - my plated parts will do for now though.

And, Mr Shodog, I've seen your Blingfoot build - extremely impressive stuff, especially given the Tecnacrafts!! I believe that you managed to get a CCP monster beetle and converted it to a Blingfoot, if I'm not mistaken..?

Keep in mind that CCP chrome parts weren't that great of plating in the first place. there are thin spots and places where it looks like the chrome ran like a paint run. I'm surprised those pics are still up of my Blingfoot.
