Rc10t dirt problem

Post by jayvet »

My 10t keeps getting dirt in the pinion and spur gear and chews up the gears I sealed the cover with silicone and that didn't help anyone have this problem or a fix?

Have you got the felt gasket in there? That's is a big hole where dirt can get it. Some might be coming in through the motor, Tamiya sells these almost cardboard-like gaskets you could try.

Hmm. Odd question; have you got the cap for the slipper adjustment hole in?

You can make your own seal or gasket with foam of some kind that is thick enough to fill the gap. Just punch holes large enough to fit over the plastic posts, and then a hole large enough for the topshaft.

I seen that one I thought you meant a seal for the gear cover I have that installed already yes the plug is in the hole for slipper clutch adjustment like I said I also sealed it with some silicone and it's still getting in there and getting in the teeth of the spur gear and chewing up the metal pinion gear.

Sometimes, depending on the size of the spur gear, it can either bump the gear cover from sealing to the motor plate, or just wear a hole in the motor plate, allowing dirt & mud to ingress.

As for the original felt gaskets, the roll pin on the top shaft had a tendency to unravel them, causing them to allow ingress of dirt & mud. If that didn't happen, the felt could crumble from getting wet repeatedly. Besides, the original felts aren't the easiest to sort, so they prolly should only be used on shelfers.

I'm proud of the person out there who is repro-ing those grey foam gaskets on eBay, for his/her efforts, but the foam is "open-cell", and as such will allow moisture to ingress.

I think the best bet is to find one of those old aftermarket gaskets, made out of red closed-cell foam, and use that. They tend to seal better than the eBay ones.

I may have a couple of the red ones NIP, gotta dig around.

Also: How exactly did you seal up the gear cover with silicone? Could you post some pics?
