What's that called?

Post by Halgar »

What is the "chaff" left over from injection molding? You know, the sharp stuff you have to trim/file off bodies and parts. I need the word and it escapes me at the moment ... :?

It's something more like "strike" or "wane" ...

Don't you hate it when you've got a word on the tip of your tongue and you just can't quite grasp it?

While Halgar was "flashing" everyone, it was noticed that he also had a little "sprue"

Flash is the term for any excess material along a seam or mould line.
Gate trim is the part where the component is trimmed off the sprue (or the frame that holds all the moulded parts)

Actually, the "sprue" are the mold tunnels that flow the plastic to the actual parts, not the extra bits of material around an unlclean mold. They make up essentially the bars in the plastic trees that connect the pieces in the mold. The hangnails around a molded part that need to be cleaned off with a knife or Dremel is called flashing.
