Would a bad carfax history change your mind on a $300 car?

Also any amount of backyard hack job work done to it will not be on a carfax.

i dont know much about paper work type things on cars. ideally i was thinking i could just keep it in my garage and never register it, put a different motor and swap the dash and plates from my other red 85 camaro whenever i wanted to drive it for a short trip. but i know that is hardcore illegal.

The VIN says its a 1985 and that there are 10 records found in the CARFAX Vehicle History database. Probably all not too good either. :P

Because I was bored I decoded the VIN for you.

1= USA
G= General Motors
1= Chevrolet
F= Coupe
P= Camaro Coupe or Z28
87= Sport Coupe/Camaro
S= Engine 173-135 (LB8)
4= (This is a check digit)
F= 1985
L= Van Nuys
467630 (Last Six Digits increase by one with each car built at each plant)

Oh and things are only illegal if you get caught but you didn't hear that from me. :mrgreen:

It would also be uninsured, which means in the event of an accident, your fault or otherwise, you would be left on the hook for damages and injury, not your insurance company. I'm not saying "don't do it", just be aware that it's not just about the car. 8)

I was gonna make a crack about Gamma buying this car, but thought it still might be a little too soon for transamman. :mrgreen:

Honestly, carfax is not all it's cracked up to be. It gives you basic info on the vehicle, but in regards to the part about prior body work/damage they are sometimes inaccurate. By my understanding-a report is flagged as damage if a poilce and/or insurance claim is made. This could be as small as a bumper scuff or as big as a total. I've seen reports stating damage when there was minimal at best, and reports that showed "good" where the vehicle had been significantly repaired.

i see third gen camaros and firebirds for like 500 dollars all the time on craigslist. im undecided if i like the "sport" body style or the RS which has the skirts. because they also had the RS which has the skirts and the same motor and tranny (which is a 2.8).

There's a difference between a change of ownership/title transfer and registering the vehicle. I know when I sell a vehicle, I have the buyer fill out the title paperwork then I send it in ASAP, that way I know that it will get out of my name and liability immediately. Registration is merely paying for current license plate tags.

I live in Cali too, be warned, if the tags are not current, you'll be hit with stiff penalties. I've know guys who have bought fixers that were unregistered and had to leave them sitting for up to 7 years because the fines were more than the car was worth. Once it's sat for a certain length of time, the DMV forgives the penalties and you can register the car as normal.

I can drive all the way across town on a 4-wheeler drinking a beer and cops won’t even look twice… :lol:
