Losi Shock body length variation

Post by aconsola »

Has anyone noticed that losi shock bodies seem to vary in the length of the cylinder? I noticed today when I got my .6" bodies for the front shocks on my jrx-2.
The overall length of both .9" rear shocks are the same, but the length of the mounting tab and cylinder vary greatly from one to the next. The 2 rear shocks in the picture below were built from new parts, the bodies came out of packs with the same old jrx-2 style header card from the same shop. There is considerable variation as seen in the pix, luckily the colors match well unlike the front ones which are different in color and tab length.
as an aside, has anyone gotten a NIP losi shock tower that wasnt all scratched up? Every one I've gotten so far with my projects has looked like it was tossed around a bit at the factory before putting it into the bag. :? both towers in the pics were fresh out of sealed packages.

That's pretty wild. :( I've never seen anything like that.

i have seen that before as well. i have a few sets of losi shocks that are like that. i have also seen a difference in color some being silver and some with the blueish purple tint like their motor mounts.i think i have a car that has 2 different color sets on it. did both shocks come out of the same package? in my case i just chalked it up to older style vs newer style but if yours came out of the same bag then thats just weird.

The shorter of the two are the early ones. If you have X2, XT, J2, Pro, or SE boxes, you can see the differences in the lengths. Not sure what the driver for the change is.

on the front the short tabbed shock did come out of a newer style package.

On the rear both bodies came out of separate parts packages, but both were the same original JRX-2 labeled package from the same shop, both of which were yellowed/shelf worn about the same. The difference between the rear shocks is more subtle than the front.

The fronts are obvious generational differences, with the newer one hacing a much shorter tab, no bevel to the cylinder upper edge, and much darker color.

I compared a bunch of .9 bodies all of which were very similar in color(the lighter silver) and no two seemed exactly alike in terms of length of tab vs cylinder. They ranged between the 2 in the picture(how I got my longest and shortest one on the same build is pure chance I guess).
I wonder how there could be such variation in a machined part.
