- Worlds' Car for my nephew -

Post by Asso_man! »

Ever since my 7 year old nephew saw one of my old school RC10's running in front of my house, he has been crying to get one and always asks when I will be able to build one for him. Of course I could build like 10 cars out of spare parts laying around in my workshop and left over from restorations/previous builds, but it seems I never manage to do it and on top I would like to offer him a consistent and reliable car to start with, not something built with worn and used parts that ha will constantly have to fix.

Since he will turn 8 on the 20th of November, I started looking around on eBay for a nice basis to start with. I sadly missed a very nice Team Car aconsola had put on eBay and for which I had a snipe set up that totally messed up because of a reported "unknown error": http://www.ebay.com/itm/160644217024?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649
and recently stumbled on this Worlds RC10 that had a 120$ BIN: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=110746760105&ssPageName=ADME:X:RTQ:US:1123
I am quite pleased with it as the price was reasonable and it actually looks in fantastic shape (besides the missing Stealth, but I have like 5 of them that just need a refresh/rebuild).

My plan is to clean it, rebuild the shocks, add a Stealth and fit a Mabuchi or stock motor in it connected to an old Futaba ESC (I have a box full of these) combined with 3600 Nimh batteries. If you have any good advice about building a car for a young noob, I'm all ears. More pics when it arrives here. Stay tuned!

Looks to be in pretty good shape, I actually got the worlds car listed just before this car by the same seller. Shipping has been a little slow, I should have mine by Monday.

i wouldn't build it any different than you normally would. other than slowing the car down enough to match his driving abilty. you can always make it go faster down the road.

Good ideas guys!

Here are some pics I took as soon as I opened the box upon arrival. Car is not too bad, but that previous owner felt like Brian Kinwald without the craftmanship: he countersunk almost every hole in the chassis, and messed up a few ones by drilling too deep (left chassis hole to attach the nose tube & right chassis hola to attach rear arm mount).up to the point that there is barely enough metal left to make the chassis strong enough. Hence, I might use a used Team Car chassis instead, I have a few of these laying around, will see... Otherwise, there were some bonuses like the early Ti RCPS turnbuckles and the front Wide Five tires that are dirty but in very good shape still. I will probably keep these  and replace them by more common parts. Chassis was stripped down this weekend and rebuild is planned any time soon as the car needs to be ready for his birthday, that is 20 October  I'll have to work hard on it to be ready!

The car is now sitting on wheels and almost ready to be delivered to its new owner (not before I paint the body though, which I hate, and decal it with Autographics). It has been dismantled up to the last screw and rebuilt "à la Asso-man!" while always keeping in mind simplicity and user friendlyness. Gave it a test run today and it goes quite well. Any ideas for gearing that old school Johnson motor? I have a 78 spur and 22 pinion right now and it looks good so far. I swapped some parts from the roller I received with either better or more simple parts. Here some pics:

Some fixing was necessary here as the previous owner over milled the side hole hooking the left nose tube that was all loose.

Thanks for the comments guys. I painted a body last weekend with three rattle cans and some tape. This must be like the fifth body I painted myself, so I'm not totally dissatified with it. There some flaws of course, but nothing really noticeable. I added the number 8 as he just turned eight. I still have to apply a few decals, will probably put his first name with Autographics letters. The whole bundle will be offered to him next Saturday.

Pics don't do real justice (the tail looks black but it is actually a deep blue). I hope you guys like too :)

Hey Jason my nephew, weren't you happy with the one I built for you? I can see you bashed and tricked it out quite a lot since I sent it to you
