The Junkyard dog RC10 gold pan A build ( COMPLETED 04/06/12)

Post by ratdude »

Hi , I am new if you didn't catch a couple of my previous posts.

Back when I was into the hobby the first time I wanted one of these RC10's . I couldn't afford it of course and ended up with my Losi Junior 2 , which I loved . ( still do )

But I always wanted one of these , so I guess I'll build one.

I picked up a couple of totes of RC stuff off craigslist and these 2 gems were in the lot, so I think I have enough to get something started here.

On to pictures of the junk !

Image

Obligatory underside shot
Image

Through the miracle of the net , a fast teardown .
Image

Just to show I can clean something ( LOVE removing petrified servo tape and epoxy )
Image

Close up on the damage to the gold pan ( so its not a loss when I drill a couple holes in it )
Image

This is probably gonna take a while ...

What holes do you need to drill?
It also has two extra holes at the leading edge where the nose mounts.

Looks like I am gonna go to a stealth style transmission , more on that next post.

Good catch on the nose , I didn't even notice until you mentioned it .

Transmission part 1

Post by ratdude »

Ok , I guess I will throw up more pictures of junk .

I should mention that what you guys saw in the intro is pretty much what I have to work with at the moment .

The roller is ( was ) incapable of being a runner , it has a broken rear control arm mount ( hello Ebay ), and the suspension had a pretty jacked around setup , which I think was to make it do cool things in a circle , not sure . the roller was running a stealth style RPM tranny, 1.96 ratio ( thanks LTO_Dave and the what is it ? thread ! ).

On with the show .

OK , deep in my score of goodies ( junk ) I found this crusty gear cluster , the only remnants I could find of the original gold pan tranny .
Image

I noticed the gears appear to be mis-matched ( feel free to school me , never had one of these )
Image

CRUSTY ( and frozen )
Image

Through ebay I scored a tranny case and the top plate ( with some odds and ends , slipper parts I think )
Image

Which yielded me this incomplete transmission assembly.
Image

For right now at least that RPM tranny is looking pretty good , it is complete and it appears to work .
I have no idea what the original tranny gear ratio was so I don't know if I will be gearing up or down.

The only action this thing will see is in the backyard so I think I should be able to pinion change my way to something usable .

As always , feel free to comment and educate me , I am totally new to Team Associated .

That oval set up is bad ass! I'd hold on to that. 8)

One was cut down to reduce drag by a previous owner / builder

Should I take this as another oval mod ? ( since only one side has been changed )

Oh , nothing is going anywhere at this point , I need it for the time being . Oval racing just isn't my thing . Maybe it will be later on though .

And today's victim is..........

Post by ratdude »

Finally I got a chance to do some tinkering , I decided to see what I had to work with as far as the RPM tranny .

More JUNK !

I include the pics of the wheels for a ID if someone can , I havent decided if I love them or hate them yet .
But I do have them .

Ever wonder what your tranny might look like rode hard and put away yet ? Here ya go.

This one is just a reference shot for me.

Well, I guess I am happy I took this thing apart , I really considered just running it as-is.

No pics of assembly , that will come later , got a whole bunch of bearings soaking in a nice oil bath.

by the size of those wheels they look like 3 pc rc10t truck rears with 2.2 buggy tires on them. If they arent that big they are still associated 3 piece rc10 wheels.
You weren't gonna get far with them bearings...well you wouldn't get there fast if you got there :?

The wheels are two piece , but I think your right about RC10T . I was going to include a pic with the tires stripped (cut) off but they are such a glued up mess I didn't take the picture.

your right on on the 2.2 buggy tires , they didn't match so I don't have any remorse on cutting them up.

Just because I needed to see progress

I decided to clean up the shocks ( which of course I have no idea what they are from , so feel free if you know )

Amazingly they had oil in there and didn't really look too god awful bad !
Again good thing I took things apart , the valves were flipped on 2 of them , I suppose it's a oval track thing .

First up the fronts . I kind of like these , particularly the screw adjusters for the height adjustment .

Dirty

Apart

The backs ( like these less but I have them )

Dirty

Apart ( not sure how different the valves are on these two , but they look pretty close )

I am going to call it a win , lol .

If you are keeping it on a budget one way to get the most out of those shocks is to polish the shock shaft with 1000 grit, a drill and some Brass-O (polishing compound). Once polished they will have less tendency to scratch or damage the seals, and also pick up dirt and debris. Also I see that one shock end is shorter than the other, could have been done to limit travel, but its better to run an internal limiter in the shock, so you do not risk pulling the shaft out of the ball end, and possibly losing you retainer and spring.

Hope this helps a bit.
