Old Is new - OVAL Edition!!
Back-story:
So a fellow RCer who works at a different hobby shop was talking about a sportsmans Stock oval class. They already have a few guys running dirt oval with the Dominator style sprint style buggies as well as a popular Slash 2wd class.
He pulled up a pic of a converted B4 (he recently picked up a 22b) and talked about converting it over to run a trans-am style body. (It got me thinking back to the friday night races that compete at local fairgrounds where I grew up.)
So that got me thinking about folks who ran the older Gold tub RC10s as oval cars. What would one need to make an oval car, but updated with B4ish components? I have several RC10s, and in addition to making a "Whats old is new" offroad racer, why not try the same thing with oval. With brushless and Lipo, the "weight" of the gold tub would make for a decent platform wouldn't it?
Anyone have any experience even from the Goldtub days? Were folks running one side wider than the other? would I be better off to convert a DS rather than modifying a buggy? In my head I'm thinking vintage stealth, but updated arms and suspension components and make sure the weight is on the L-side of the chassis, right?

i ran a houge graphite chassis, jg lowering kit, andy's front bumper w/body mounts, andy's rear body mount on bolink cut foams with a wedge body.
staggered arms didn't work from what i recall, some guys early on tried it and the cars were squirelly.
i never did try a goldie, graphite was all the rage. i even had a converted jrx2 with an edm body. good times, love the old oval. the real old oval before oval specific cars hit the market.
i'm not sure OIN long arm cars would have any advantage.

Speedy's has B4 conversion kits and pretty much has the market. As far as staggered arms, I have never been able to work them. My best set-ups from BITD to present have started with a balanced chassis, 50:50 left to right and 40:60 front to rear. From there I can add wedge with the shocks and stagger with the tires to make it neutral through the corners. When NASCAR crews add a "round of wedge" they are either raising or lowering the corner weight .050" (20 TPI). A lot of chassis adjust can be cranked in when you're working with 1/10 scale.

Instead of using different length arms how about offsetting their mounting position on the nose like the old BME kick-up did.
Start with a buggy nose plate then cut half of it to the width of a truck kick-up. Use stock buggy arm mounts and wide arms.
You could also give the rear end the similar treatment by cutting half of it as you would for an RPM World's conversion. Use Dynotech Klein arms.
So you'd be bringing the left wheels in to offset the chassis's center of gravity to the left of the car....but since left and right arms are all the same length roll center changes should be less erratic.

The 17.5 classes (27T Brushed) and even 13.5 classes seem to be disappearing. I am going to compete in SCLM this year (1/10 short course truck with 1/8 LM body) because it is one of the biggest classes at my local track. Found out that the motor of choice is 8.5!!!
Really think USVTA has the right idea (Novak 25.5 ONLY) and is getting very well established.

My first post wasn't directed at you but at the modifications MOmo was looking at doing. Never cared for that idea of the sportsman class myself as I see being a better engineer than the next guy is just as worthy of acknowledgment in the hobby as being a better driver.

When we raced oval on the roller rinks I ran a mid conversion RC-10 with a corvette body.


Mounted the battery on the left side and ran front shocks at all four corners. Not sure about the settings though.

First and foremost, I know NOTHING about oval racing, but for some reason I thought I remembered cars running 1 short and one longer arm, but maybe I am crazy. I know that some of the bodies were offset and ran large wing dams.
So maybe i should look here, since this guy seems to have a handle on the oval stuff...

you need to figure out where you'll be racing, and find out exactly what the rules are. around here it's street stock that runs the camaro/monte carlo bodies (from mcallister), you must run an rtr rc10 b4, and there is only a few mods you can do to it.
it's designed to get people into dirt oval racing, and try to keep the costs down.

Yea. that would be super-modified. Those are crazy fast cars. They have huge motors slug out to left side, offset chassis, big, big tires, and a brake-activated wing. Oh, and they run on alcohol...! Usually hold the track record wherever they ran.

If the rules haven't been set yet, maybe see if they're open to a Breakout class instead of a Sportsman class. The rules would only have to mandate body type and target time for the laps...everything else racers run could remain open.
