Quick BMX Question

Post by Synergy »

I'm thinking about buying a BMX, just to knock around the doors on. I'm looking for a new bike but old school style and wondered what choices there are, I have only managed to turn this one up to this point which I do really like.

I had seen that thread but all the bmx stuff discussed there appears to be vintage and I didn't want to derail it.

I bought a re-release S&M Holmes. Mine was serial number 8 I seem to recall. It is one of the largest frames made, so perfect for adults. It is all chrome, with a layback post, and contrasted with every other component being black, including front bars, forks, everything. I used many old school parts such as clamps, bars, stem, post, Bullseye hubs, snowflake chainwheel, Redline cranks etc. But many new parts which are vastly superior, such as Chris King headset, new triple wall rims, DT swiss spokes, tyres, Paul brakes, DMR magnesium pedals etc. It looks totally old school from a distance. Any new items are very plain in black, so blend right in.

I really dig those retro PK Ripper looptails, been drooling over them since they released the nickel/blue version a few years ago. I say get it!

The SE retro stuff is pretty cool. The PK is a classic, but you might consider getting a cruiser. 20" bikes on under adult sized bodies are no where near as comfortable as a 24 or a 26. I'd recommend a Floval Flyer or an OM Flyer if you're into the SE line. 24" bikes are a nice size, they're not too big, but they're small enough to still feel like a regular BMX bike. Think of them as similar proportions to how a BMX felt when you were 14 or 15.

You've gotta get a Skyway re release.

They also released the Quadangle so check it out for something different.

Why not build a vintage bike or buy a good used one ?

Have those same pedals :-D.

Had no idea BMX companies were doing the re-re thing! Always wanted an Auburn CR20R. I do have a set of the Auburn handlebars on my RedLine 700SL though.

There's a ton of re-release BMX stuff being made these days. It's kind of ruining the hobby. SE is doing it right and just going retro, not making exact copies of their old stuff. Skyway is borderline, the TA 24 is retro and It think the 20 is too, but some of their Tuff wheels are pretty much the same as they were back in the day. Don't even get me started on Hutch.

Speaking of which, here is my Trickstar. All original, the only repro part on it is the crank arm decals, everything else is original finish from bitd.

I just picked up the OM Flyer. I am 6ft and peddle comfortably on longer rides. Wheelie all day with plenty of clearance over the top tube. Came with Ame grips and the same fluted seat post I had bitd. Great retro bike out of the box.

Some nice ideas guy's thanks.

I think I would like to stick to 20", I'm pretty sure this bike isn't going to see much riding, mostly hanging on the wall looking cool.

I really want something turn key, I don't have much time to put model cars together at the moment so I don't want to start having to search ebay for parts and spend a lot of time spannering.

When I was a boy mum and dad couldn't afford a high end bike for me, I had a Puch Space Invader which came fitted with OGKs, I loved it but secretly I pined for something like a PK Ripper / GT Performer.

Does anyone have any links to were I can buy the other discussed re res (Skyways & Hutch) in the UK, I don't seem to be able to find them?
