Goldpan motor suggestions

Post by gumbajv »

My original motor gave up, circa '84. Looking for recommendations for a new motor, just for bashing around.
thanks.

What speed control do you have?
Without knowing that, and what it can handle, the most anyone can do is recommend another 27 turn brushed motor. They're available used through ebay for cheap ($10 shipped cheap.)
A mild mod as Don mentioned would be 19 turns or so.
I just saw some snow pictures of the Goldpan you put up. Can you post some body off shots?

I'm using a Novak Rooster esc, 2S lipo or 6 or 7 cell nimh. I'm using 2.2 rims front & back in the snow shots. I'm going back to 1.5 - 1.6rims front & back with approximately 2.875 dia. front tires and 3.325 diameter rear tires. The tires won't be here for a few days. I'll post a few shots tomorrow.

How about a Reedy Radon? They're cheap and easy to get.

You can go down to 15t brushed with the rooster, the super rooster is supposed to be unlimited.

Why does it need to work with the stock gearing? If you're willing to go brushless, aren't you willing to get some pinions?
Otherwise a cheap mild modified like the Radon or Thunder Tiger 19t would be good.
If you can get a nice one for a good price a Tamiya Sport Tuned might be a good option.

Pinion suggestions to go with a brushless is fine. I've read a few posts where folks are changing the gearing to match kv motors. Since this is just to blast around, I don't feel like splitting the case and changing gearing.

You change the gearing by swapping different pinions and spurs, external of the case. The transmission guts are not changed.

Ahhh, didn't know that. Who is a good source for pinion/spur gear combinations?

There are a few companies out there but Robinson Racing is probably the biggest and most well-known: http://www.robinsonracing.com/

The 'Super Machined Spur Gear' line is what you would want for a six gear tranny's diff. The diff ball locations are important so be aware of the difference between product lines.

Kimbrough is up there also: http://www.kimbroughracingproducts.com/

Any of their standard spurs should work.

The only Kimbrough spur that will work with a 6 gear are ones with holes for diff balls, like this one:
http://www.amain.com/product_info.php/cPath/1_24_1023_1874/products_id/32165/n/Kimbrough-48P-Spur-Gear-87T?utm_source=Google-Base&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=Product-Feeds&gclid=CKSNyuPXiL0CFUNqOgodDlgAfQ
If you're buying a new pinion and spur, I suggest a 48p Kimbrough spur and a Losi pinion. I've had bad experience with Robinson pinions wearing out spurs prematurely.

The gold pan is from '84 with no transmission mods. I decided to try this brushless set up, Speed Passion Reventon S Brushless ESC Metal B. Program Box V3.0S 3500KV Motor. The 3500 kv motor is probably too fast, but I thought I could slow it down with a different pinion/spur combo. I can always swap the motor out for something else. Looks like folks have been using the 72/28 combination with kv motor.
I looked at the Kimbrough Racing site, and thought about trying their 48 p spur & pinion set up.
