I May be Insane - 6-Gear Short Arm Content

Post by GeekSpeed »

Hi all.

So I may be officially insane. I really want to race a short arm 6-gear gold pan at my local racetrack. It is probably the best configuration for a vintage RC10, as it dirt with a slight loam when run wet. I don't expect to win anything, I just want to have fun. I am hoping you guys might have some tips for me when it comes to racing one of these little beasts.

Tires/wheels: I am going to see if I can get re-re Turbo Scorpion wheels to fit. They are 2.2 and have a great retro look. Anyone fitted these to an RC10 before?
Body: Protech
Shocks: Short front, long rear. That's right, full old school. Does anyone have an suggestions for springs and oil?
Shock towers: graphite old-school
Trans: 6-gears!
Motor: 17.5 brushless. I am going to look at the RC10 Classic manual to see what gearing I need to start with. Any other suggestions?
Battery: Lipo, not sure if shorty or standard length. Any suggestions on this?

As you can see, I am not altering it much from its 80s glory. That being said, I want it to be as good as a short-arm 6-gear can be. Any suggestions would be most helpful. I will post pics once the car arrives (should be later this week).

Thanks!

I would suggest the bearing mod on the six gear trans. The one where you add the bearing in place of the felt around the outdrive. It has been discussed alot on this forum. It really helps to stabilize the trans. What class are you planning on running it in?

Good call. I will see if I can find the thread.

I am just going to club race in the 17.5 stock class. Nothing crazier.

I don't know how your club races are, but up here, 17.5 stock buggy is the most competitive class and the cars are nearly as fast as some of the mod cars. I built a wide front arm, stealth trans gold pan to play with on the track and its fun but could never come close to keeping up with modern buggies. I even tried to set ride height and geometry as close as possible to my B6. I run a Novak 17.5 ballistic motor and esc and its plenty fast, but its nothing compared to my B6 running a Reedy 17.5 S-Plus. I don't want to discourage you in any way-----just a heads up that you got your work cut out for you. We also run on an indoor turf track. I would think a dirt track would be better for an old rc10. Here's a pic of my race cars. The 2.2 wheels on mine are from JC Racing. I've been toying with the rc10 hoping that I could work up some interest in vintage car racing at my local track.

I certainly appreciate the feedback. I am just doing it for fun with the expectation that I am going to be slow. The tracks here are actually pretty good for vintage buggies, though, so that will help. I have a rere Worlds that I run and it is pretty close to the more modern buggies. I just don't enjoy the modern vehicles for some reason. The older ones are the ones that I like, even though they are slow. Go figure.

FWIW. Last summer I pieced together an old school 6-gear, short arm, back to basics RC10 to run on my little backyard dirt track. It even has dog bones and the super sloppy steering system. I did the outdrive bearing mod Basher mentioned and have a Reedy 3500kv in it right now. Tons of fun. Love it! :D
Here's an early photo with old school electronics.

I ran this car for a little while, using the jelly beans and 'stock' re-re classic tires. Took 3rd out of 6 in stock buggy, using a 27t brushed as well. A lot had to do with me understanding the car and being able to toss it through the corners. I didnt clear the big doubles like the modern buggies, but didnt need to.

I'll try to look up my set up, it was a couple years back :?

Thanks Joey! Any setup help would be super appreciated.

Are you guys still running vintage races in the IE every once in a while? I would like to be able to come down for a couple. The RC10 is not going to be the only 80s rocket that I race. :-D

Couple races coming up that have a vintage class or are vintage centric :)

LRH Labor day race monday (indoor clay)
The Farm on Aug 26th, backyard track in Yucaipa, laid out really nice and very vintage specific race.

I know on the shocks, #2 up front, 30 weight oil, #1 in rear, 30 weight oil, that is where I always start. I think I used the re-re silvers all around, had a bit of push, but very derivable and manageable.
