My ReBuild Questions Thread

Post by MONSTER »

How many different Degree Block Carriers are there? I have 2 diff sets.

Give me some simple explainations of the effects each have on car.

Left = Drivers Side, correct? As if Sitting In the car.

there's 2 different hub carriers. 0 and 1.5 degree. the "L" means left, as in driver side, which would be a 1.5.

no, each side should have the same 0 or 1.5 degree carrier.

toe in at the rear increases traction at the expense of top speed and turn-in.

in that case, there's 6. 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, and 30 degree castor blocks. here's a guide to understanding suspension setup. go to "suspension geometry" in the table of contents.

1. 9 TB Holes, Short Wing Tube Holes: Team Car and CE edition with Stealth and white parts

2. 9 TB Holes, Long Wing Tube Holes: first gen. early cars (stock gold tub and early CE edition)

3. 4 TB Holes, Short Wing Tube Holes: World's car and (maybe) last production runs for the CE edition, latest version

#2 early gold tub and early TQ10. The CE had short wing tubes because of the longer rear camber link, as started on the graphite car.

For the front castor blocks, there were 5.

6211 5 degrees
6212 10 degrees
6213 15 degrees (standard)
6214 20 degrees
6215 25 degrees

This was from an older catalog, so Associated may have come up with more.

Changing the castor block changed the pivot angle of the front wheel with respect to the ground. Using a truck wheel (because it's wider) as an example, a 5 degree block will always allow the full contact patch of the tire to stay flat with the ground. Changing it to a 25 degree block, you will notice that the contact patch is only flat when the truck is going straignt. When the tires are turned, only the edges of the tires will be touching the ground.

Changing the block to a 5 degree may sound like a good idea, but the car becomes more "twitchy"...less forgiving. Generally, my off road trucks would have 25 degree blocks while my on road (carpet) trucks would only have 10 degree blocks.

hope this helps...

Thanks for all the info, Guys. Like I said, out of the 5 Sets I have, 4 are nearly straight up and down (to the ground), and 1 is maybe the 20*/25*. I dont see any marking to indicate what degree they may be. The Degree is measured in relation to the ground, correct?

I decided to put the "angled set" on the Short Arm Car, and a "straight up set" on the Wide Arm Car. What would you guys do, given the parts options on hand?

The angle is the relation of the kingpin compared to a line perpendicular to the ground. The 30 degree blocks are actually square, the kingpin and hinge pin are 90degree from each other. this is because the nose of the chassis has 30 degrees of caster built in. The 0degree blocks have the most angle to them with the hinge pin and king pin at 60degrees (measured on forward side) this will remove the 30 degrees introduced by the chassis and put the kingpin at 90 degrees to the ground.
