Blue tub RC10 RPM build

Post by jwscab »

I blew the dust off of one on my projects (actually, they don't really collect much dust, I open them up to review them and what parts I need to get the kit to 100%, or change things around)

I have about 15 different 'kits' of buggies on my to do pile, and as I acquire and trade parts, sometimes I shift the direction of the pile of parts.

This is one such build. I had a tub, nose, motor plate and shock caps anodized what feels like 6 yrs ago, but who knows by now. I love this blue. Somehow I ended up with this sweet RPM transmission. I was going to build this originally with black and blue parts, but then I found a lot of RPM natural parts, then a few more bits(including some unicorn tears), then another project needed the parts I had in this box, one thing leads to another, and here we are.

I got a few chunks of this Texalium stuff from Seabass AKA Jake when he build a yokomo 870C out of it. Enough to make a couple of towers and trans brace and couple other small bits. It's kinda weird, smells like automotive fiberglass and the top layer is easily ragged if not careful. But it looks really cool, so I went with it.

As with anything I build, I have to make parts, modify things, or start assembly and then change it up when I come to a design problem. I don't think i have ever built a box stock RC10.

Enjoy the few pics, I will update it as I progress, hopefully, in the not too distant future. A picture of the parts lot, and a few mockups. The lighting sucks and always picks up my associated parts as really yellow but they aren't that bad.

next things to do are drill new holes in the gt nose tubes for buggy length, and make a rear shock tower.

Really like the color of the blue ano, will you be building the rear at original width ?
Who do you race for ?
Me……. I race for me.
That’s impossible, I was told you need a sponsor to race.

As of now, yes. I don't have the worlds rear parts for this one, nor white rpm rear ones either. it's something I'd like to change, but it's a cost/availability/worth calculation. Plus, I'm still on the fence for modifying the chassis(further). it has unfortunate servo holes and a notch already, so I could trim the notch out, and sand the edges, and then trimming to rpm rear length would be fine, but I would still need to get some kind of arms.

ideally, i'd find the rear arms in white at stock length, but those are very hard to find, and when they do come up, I'll have to talk myself into the price. I have found a set of 3d printed ones on shapeways, this guy will never be run, so it's an option. I could experiment with a little yellow and green dye to try and get that translucent RPM look.

for now, it's stock white arms.

Any way you end up doing it I’m sure it’ll be really nice.
Oh the notched tubs kill me. I actually just recently pick up a beautiful condition late black parts CE and hadn’t noticed the battery wire notch in the tub.
Hey Jr put down the hacksaw !
Oh well I guess it’ll be a cut down along with a really nice early 6010 that I have that had the same mod.

Honestly well done lightening holes bother me less than the servo hole and notching the pan. Ugh. So frustrating.

When I got this tub done, I didn't have time to trim it like I wanted. It is what it is.

I've grown to really like the late black ce with the black original servo saver. I was going to build one but I have others, like this one already kitted ready to go

Looks great Joe.
I never noticed the *ahem* chassis mods until you mentioned them.
No doubt done many years ago. I think the car looks great anyway.

I recall a racer bud bitd who gave me an early light gold anno A stamp chassis tub. I went home that night and immediately started punching it full of holes to "lighten it", I guess - I really don't know what I was thinking. Young and stupid was I.
Anyway, when I returned to the track the next weekend with the RC10 I'd built, the guy was furious - he could not believe how I'd ruined the tub he just gave me.

Looking back, we couldn't have anticipated that these things would continue to be of interest and actually become collectible in a few decades.
I still have that tub but I'm too embarrassed to show anyone.

Love your build. This is my blue one. I have a display case with 5 cars in it in my living room and my blue chassis has been in there since day 1.

Remember it's either a runner or a shelfer. Everything else is just parts.

Thanks!! That one you have looks awesome!! I think Scr8p had a white and blue one a long time ago and that color combo just stuck with me, although I think it stems all the way back to BMX bikes too... loved them, but never could afford them.

had a few minutes to actually put some screws and pins in things. still a few parts to cut out of the texalium, but fitting up, made up the turnbuckles too. getting there slowly. I have my eye on some possible changes but it will be a few days before I know for sure.....

One interesting thing I noticed is the rear hub carriers. Did you modify them yourself to accept a non-flanged bearing or was that something RPM offered? I've never seen (noticed) them before.

Also, learned something new with 'texalium', never heard of that before either.

Build is coming along nicely!!!

Yeah the hubs I have are the rpm truck hubs. They use an oversized non flanged bearing.

I got about 15 seconds in before hitting the big X.
Never heard that song before and I never want to. Blech!
