how to get white junk off of new tires?

Post by aconsola »

What is the best way to get this white residue stuff off of my vintage tires that were newly liberated from their original packaging?

 i was gonna ask this a couple days ago but forgot.

somewhere on the forum, there is a link to tc where some guy says to put the tires in a pillow case and toss it in the dryer. i don't remember what setting, but it's supposed to take that crap right off.

I tried that last year on a pair of truck tires and after 15 minutes in the dryer they were hot and still covered with the same junk :(

I have had success with soaking them in simple green overnight and scrubbing them with a tooth brush.
I am not here cause I am playing photographer and on my mountain bike.

i've ruined a couple sets of tires cooking off super glue. granted, it was only when the tire and rim were airtight and it stretched the rubber due to the expanding hot air inside, but i still wouldnt take the chance.

i can see how tossing them in the dryer would work, the dishwasher might work as well.

Losi tires seem to be the worst when it comes to the residue. Goo Gone works very well. You'll need to get a big soft brush and gently scrub in a circular patern. Use regular liquid dish washing detergent to remove the excess Goo Gone. The losi tire will be very shiney when completed :D

NOTE: I've only used this for the older losi tires (original compound and the XT compound from the jrx2 series).

To get rid of mold release agent, spray Simple Green and scrub with a vegetable brush. Rinse, and give a nice light coat of WD-40, then wipe off... they'll look better than new.
