RC10 A+ Buggy Project

Post by Frankentruck »

The overall chassis dimensions were close enough that it seemed like 'a good idea' to move a 6 gear RC10 buggy from a heavily used A stamp chassis to a new RC10B6 91650 chassis. My standards for close enough are low though.

I started by printing a gearbox that's compatible with the chassis. I'm going to run with 5/8" x 3/8" outdrive bearings, so they might as well install on the inside of the gear box.

The first big hurdle is going to be how to attach the rear suspension.

Cool project!
Since you're printing a gearbox case, is it possible to incorporate suspension mounts into the sides of the cases?
Anyway, it was just a thought.

I've thought about that, like a Traxxas gearbox with the other integral rear arm mounts. For the first attempt I'm not going that route. I'm starting with a plan that uses the original mounts.

First try: wrap around rear arm mount blocks. Need to work on a compatible rear bulkhead next.

The bulkhead is sorted out, so it seemed like it was also time to christen the chassis plate before rear end assembly.

I probably should use a black nose plate.

I still need to figure out what I want to do with the nose tubes. I'm thinking about doing some 90 degree bend tubes.

I still need to get some rear axles and stuff it with electronics, but I skipped ahead and painted up a body.

I think I'm going to convert back from hyperdrive to gears because this body has a cutout for the gear cover, and I really don't have more than one hyperdrive ratio to run.

I was planning to try some beginner airbrushing but discovered that my Badger airbrush uses NPT threads and Master compressor uses BSP threads, so that has to wait until I get an adapter. Space aliens are never welcome to visit Earth because the will likely bring with them Intergalactic Standard Threads and I don't want to have to get adapters for that too.

Following your build, very impressive! It looks very stout and sturdy, and a very clean way to update the original RC10.

I figured out what I wanted to do with the nose tubes. Attaching them to my steering servo mount ended up being a simple solution. I also built up and installed a set of CVD axles. All that's left is to install the electrics and go driving.

Test fitting the ESC and receiver locations. No, I didn't originally intend to put all Tekin electronics in it, but the Novak sticker on the body is staying.

Really creative build. Yeah, wasn't expecting the Tekin electronics , but very nice nonetheless. What's wheel and tire package details?

Looks like JConcepts B2 wheels and Schumacher full spikes.

Correct on the wheels and tires. Parts are:

Jconcepts 3403/3404 mono wheels (3/16" rear axle)
Schumacher 6595/6596 full spike off-road tires.
Schumacher U6652/U6653 foam inserts.

It was a fun build. I came across a set of 3 lightly used chassis plates so I feel obligated to chop them up and make a few more of these buggies. 😁
