Astute 2009 Racer

Post by Synergy »

Well this is what I've been spending most of my hobby time on lately, my Astute 2009 racer, the thread below covers the major part of the build (RRC 1991 Works Conversion)

http://www.rc10talk.com/viewtopic.php?f=32&t=2472

It has moved on a bit from the end of that thread. I was unable to find a vintage series locally so I decided to use some post 1990 upgrades as follows:-

Chassis
Super Astute TTC transmission
Super Astute chassis
Super Astute battery boxes
Super Astute front bulkhead brace
Super Astute wheels
Schumacher mini spikes (yellow compound)
3Racing DF03 shocks with Tamiya white tuning spring kit

Electrics
TrakPower 4900 LiPos
LRP Sphere sensored ESC
LRP Vector X11 7.5T sensored brushless motor
Hitec 5945MG digital servo (I used a spare from my planes)
KO Mars combo

With exception of the modern shocks the suspension remains as was (and is still not set up for camber / caster / toe  )

I've purchased a new body set from Kamtec just need to send it for painting, once that is complete it will be off to the track for final set up and to mix it with the B4s

Way to go Synergy! Love the Super Astute, I have an old magazine that had a picture of the TRF Super Astute - will dig it out.

Have you run the car yet? Last time I ran mine it spent most of its time spinning donuts, the SA can be well twitchy

good for you sticking with your favourite.
The patience and dedication in such long-term projects can take a car aloooong way, and yours is a prime example.

little off-topic: have you seen the nimrod ongoing design for the dynastorm. Amazing stuff; makes me want to run tamiya again a bit after 20 years.

I haven't run it yet, I also remember the Astute and Super Astute being a bit tail happy however I also remember after the addition of Kyosho Gold shocks everything was much more together, I hope the 3Racing shocks have the same impact.

Mate that car looks ACE! I always get excited when i see someone take an old vintage buggy, add some modern gear and set out to do some racing. Well done! The best part is when you get your car to a certain level where you can start hosing some of the modern guys. :D I did this with my Schumacher Topcat. Because there werent enough people to run a vintage class at the club I was at in Sydney they would put me and my Topcat in with the modern 2WD stock class. Everyone was running brushless and fast stock motors while i ran a Tamiya 'Sports Tuned' brushed motor. To my suprise i was either in the top 3 or winning! No one could believe it and people were asking where they could get a Topcat and what brushless motor i was using- LOL!
The rewards are there for those who are willing to put in the work. :D

looks nice...I started doing some of the work that was mentioned in that article to my Astute...

Didn't get very far :( but there's always time again to bring it back out and complete the build - just need to get one of those Kamtec bodies and I'm set
PottBelly's R/C Raceway (RIP) | Team Tekin | GQ Tires | Slingshot Batteries | Banzai Motors | Team Psycho Cells | Exotek Racing | Team Belly

I like you. You remind me of when I was young and stupid

Thanks again for the comments.

I look forward to reading that article fakiee, I have never seen it before 8)

I think the main limitation to this cars performance Bormac will be the soft fleshy thing behind the wheel

Unfortunately its not an article :( its a picture from an old RC mag one of the big toy shows. Tamiya were displaying their latest cars and I think these were the prototypes for the super astute and top force.
