My Vintage Box Art RC10 replicas

Post by Ruffy »

I wanted to start this thread with where I have the car today, then in the next few days I will post the build pictures with narrative of how it was created.
Special thanks goes out the Mikedealer, RC10Johnny, BigJeepzz, TimRobbins, JHarris, Steve and Curtis Husting for their aid in helping me recreate this replica.
First I would like to post an image of the one sent by Curtis Husting himself of the car body as it survives today.
My 1st endeavor will be a work in process until I can get it as close as possible. My 2nd version of this car will be even more precise to the actual box art paintjob.

The shock towers, transmission brace and battery straps have all been hand cut by me; but this part of the thread is for another day.
:D

So was the pinkish red stripe paint or a pinstripeon the original? I wonder why the stripe never made it around the back of the car??? Mine might have to have that  just looks un-finished to me and i realize it will not be Box Art if i add the stripe.................................but.
and I might have to add the white bottom

Well as I look at it some more I think I see what the original design was trying to do - guess i should just shut up and leave it alone

Not a bad idea!

for those that have asked, No I did not paint this body. The body was included with a car purchase I made, so I added the stickers, window net, fog lamps, wing buttons, etc... to it. I also added the driver and I did paint him and put him together.

At first I was happy with the body, but then realized it had little things that were not identical to the box art body paint, the main one being the paint color. The original box car was not the regular orange. This is why this is my v1 boxter, and v2 is already in the making.
Here is another "cheater" picture before I post it in my own build thread showing the front and rear towers I hand cut, the battery straps and the tranny brace all which were hand made.

Ruffy nice car . I am working on one myself. I don't have the goodyears or the correct trans with the C clip . Waiting on a painter to see if he can do a body for me. What speed control was on the box art? I have a novak t-4 on this one. Should I dye the pivot balls on the rear shocks red ?

As scr8p indicated , the rear shock rod end plastic was red, who knows why other than possibly machined out of some red composite material (delrin), but either way for a true boxer, yes this should be red. Do you have to do it? Up to you, because in the end it is what you make of it.

I had already seen that and mine will be red, but first I had to "white treatement" some older ones because I did not want to ruin the nice looking ones. Another oddity I noticed, is that when they took the pics for the box, my guess is that when they had the body on, with driver, that there could not be a 7 cell battery in it as pictured on the box. So when body was on, no battery. When body was off the car (no driver) then battery is shown in the car. :D

Looking very nice RCtenracer! Love it so far. Keep us posted as we can all learn somethng from each persons build.

My front tires are the 7 groove ones, and the rear originals I just found a set of non-goodyear ones, but thankfully the boxter version had the "goodyear" words to the inside of the rims (see box side pictures with wheel off). So in my eyes there is no need for the goodyear specific tires for the boxter.

Added:
Assoman has the scoop on the Novak used. It was apparently a real early version, so there was no number on it, and it had 3 pots with machined heatsinks. I'll find the pic he posted and add it here.
