just some stuff from my old neighborhood

Post by oldskoolracer »

Here's some electronics from the old neighborhood. I got the Magnum Jr. with my first decent rc - a Tamiya Hornet. After realizing my buddy had the same frequency, my Jr.'s crystal quickly became replaceable when my dad popped the the little plate off the back. After my Hornet met its untimely end (thanks to a timing advance, my hand made 9.6V battery pack - what could happen? - and a more than willing curb), my parents bought me a Tamiya Monster Beetle. Racing, as it turns out, was always in my blood, so a couple weeks later I turned it into a Frog. The Novak gear came in the late 80's as I tried to lighten up the Frog to compete with my buddy's RC10. The Revolution Insane motor led to my first experience with glued tires. Imagine my dad's face when his 14 year old son emerges from the basement with a 'toy' that could peal the tires right off the rims at will. The rest of the motors and gear I acquired later when I picked up my current RC10, about 1994ish.

I love those old Magnum Juniors...the quality is apparent, and superior to the modern offerings, which just have a cheap look to them compared to the JR's. I have 4 of those and they all work great!
Completed projects: CYANide Onroad Optima | Zebra Gold Optima | Barney Optima | OptiMutt RWD Mid
Gallery - Coel's Stalls: Marui Galaxy & Shogun Resto-Mods | FrankenBuff AYK Buffalo | 1987 Buick GNX RC12L3

agreed. the only complaint i had as a kid was the crystal was never replaceable - that is until i popped that little crystal cover off. i have a newer unit for my MGT 4.6 - total POS, if you ask me (the controller, not the MGT). the JR has a much higher quality feel.

Awesome gear man! I still have some of that same stuff too, I'll have to dig it out of the basement and post some pics.

Now there's some memories...I had a Futaba Mag Jr for 20 years, and it still worked like a champ when I sold it with an Ofna a few years ago. I also had that same Protech charger awhile back.
The older I get, the faster I was.
