that sucks man, sorry to hear. We are getting to the point of old age/sickness with our dogs.
Flick, poor fella, pit/lab mix, ended up with bone cancer in his rear leg, sad to see him go. Probably the coolest dog I ever knew, and MY dog, the funny thing is how no matter who was around (mom, dad, etc) as soon as I showed up, no-one else was around.
I think he was up in mid teens, hard to remember, was a few years back now.
penny, runt boxer, living the longest of all her siblings, but had a stroke some time ago and is slowly going downhill now. She's around 12.
Pete, the weirdest mix I have ever seen, a pit/dalmation. I don't think he will ever go, he is a tank, but I think sheer old age will take its toll at some point. he grunts and wheezes like an old man. he was a rescue, and probably a little older than penny.

I really feel for you guys. The very same thing happened with my first dachshund. the last 4 months of his life he must have thought he chiefed a presidential. Hot dogs, bacon and any other junk food he wanted.
Really though I think I let him go a week too long as his last day was really rough on him. I carried him around the neighborhood to say goodbye to all his human and dog friends then took him to the vet for final solution. Don't make the same mistake I made, let him go out on a high point.

Like losing part of yourself- sorry to hear. Also equally as tough on your other dog as well and as corny as it sounds when the time to say goodbye comes, have your other dog there with you guys as well-it helps everyone including the two of them-

That is the hardest thing we are fighting with right now, you don't want to do it too early, but you don't want them to suffer or wake up in his own waste either. Either way you will feel terrible.shodog wrote:Really though I think I let him go a week too long as his last day was really rough on him. We kinda want him to go in his sleep on his own. He's not afraid of the vet, loves going anywhere and seeing everybody. It's hard for me to think that he'll be happy going into the vet and me knowing he won't come out. No matter what, I want him in my lap when he falls asleep (that's my vision), it will give him comfort and me (yes thinking of myself). He loves putting his head in my lap.
He is a water dog, so we plan on scattering his ashes in a lake. Originally it was Lake Michigan as that's pretty much were he is from, it's just so far away for us now. There is a lake here in SC that is awesome (pics) and we think that's where we will take him.
@ Reg, yes I agree, that is the plan.... even though the other one has A.D.D. and doesn't seem to care at the moment.
I am not here cause I am playing photographer and on my mountain bike.

I'm very sorry to hear about Shelby, Jay. I've been there/done that too and it's not easy, but I guess the suffering is worse. Our last dog, Tutti, a standard poodle, was almost 17 and just dying of old age, but it was still very hard to make the decision to end his life and, no matter what, let him go. We still miss him, but time makes it easier.

I'm very sorry to hear about your Shelby, Jay. We went through the same thing with our lab Jessie a couple of years ago and struggled as well on the "when" question. Our vet was great about keeping us informed on where she was in the process and what to expect next, and we decided to let her go before the worst of it started. We knew when it was time.

Sorry to hear that your dear friend has limited time left with you. Just try remember the good times. I know exactly how you feel, been through it before myself and no matter what anyone says it's not easy.

Sorry to read the bad news. I had to do the same thing last year in January. My boy Marvin had cancer and we had to let him go. It was real fast, we went to bed like normal woke the next day and he wouldn't eat because he couldn't hold it down.took him straight to the vet and he never came home. It was hard on me and Rachel, especially her she was there since day one in his life. Our family members will always be missed and they will always be in our hearts and our thoughts. You have my deepest sympathies.
