Left Turn Only (LTO) SRT

Post by SRTracer121 »

a little late to post this but here y'all go. a traxxas SRT turning into a dirt chewing oval truck

got the car last week and ive been slowly accumulating parts here and there

the chassis when i first got it  ...

upper deck is ruined

got the shocks, and motor and esc set aside too. the motor is a trinity ultra bird 19 mod, the esc is a novak cyclone. shocks are ae with FT caps. i have the shafts sitting somewhere too though not pictured.

im going for an all-out lto asphalt setup, a slammed suspension, reverse mounted tranny, battery on the left, foam tires, the works! this is going to be sweet!

ok i have some time this morning so i did one of my favorite things in life, tranny tear down!

despite outward appearances the internals were more then satisfactory, the diff was in great shape though i rebuilt it anyway since i have a preferred lubricant and method, the top gear was the steel unit, that will be swapped out for a machined plastic trx team gear, the idler has been worn down a bit but is still totally usable. im going to try a cut down on it too. way way back in the days of brushed motors racers and mfg's would sell and make gears that were thinner to reduce driveline drag. since im running a 19dbl this ought to be totally fine and should give me a bit more gearing wiggle room.

diff all reassembled
Image
Image
the lubricant i use for the diff, its lithium based (and long since discontinued) grease but i dont use much of it and ive got plenty
Image

Image

as i said this is going to be an asphalt car so i need asphalt tires
Image
mounting the fronts will be somewhat tricky but ive got some plans

the other issue with these is their size, they are tiny! about 2 3/4 inches in diameter. im going to need to gear way way up, probably 78/25 if not taller still. i may need to find a smaller spur like in the 65-75 range

got the tranny done, took a bit to get it shimmed just right, its very easy to over torque the screws and create binding but you still need to keep the tranny tight and keep out any slop.

i cut down the idler gear, im fairly happy with it

a keen observer and vintage trx aficionado would have picked up on the fact that my diff gear was backwards in the last post, didnt notice it myself till i went to put it in the car *facepalm*

also got the motor broken in and the shocks built! figured out how to mount the front tires. going to use trailing spindles from the blue eagle ls. i have a set that were modded to use SAE bearings like those found on the b4 or xxx

so lets talk shocks for a sec, my shocks.

i dont like progressive springs for offroad use, it makes setting up the car that much more difficult but this is an onroad car so...

Image

running 15 up front and 25 in back with rpm dual stage pistons in front and 3 hole ae (stock) pistons in back.

steering bellcranks are bearing supported

Image

the motor is all wired up to the esc, will have a crappy little video up tonight of the esc and motor powered up. 3 wire esc ftw

oh, got a set of rpm arms in today for this project and im dropping the whole classic class idea. its going to stay onroad and this 19t is staying as well

this week im going to get the shock towers, lower deck and suspension assembly done. im also going to try and get the fiero knocked out, i havent driven it in a few months and its eating at me pretty badly

picture time kids!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

the rpm bullet arms i mentioned
Image

compared to bandit arms
Image
Image\

for those arms i needed to mod the front bulk and decided to go one step further
Image
Image
Image

you've also probably realized by now that im procrastinating a bit on the chassis plates and shock towers so while i was procrastinating i did up the battery tray.

way overkill for what it'll be used for but id rather do that then have it like the fiero which hold the pack in with 2 [very] old re-usable zip-ties and a prayer.

Overkill? Not in my opinion. That soft case lipo would take very little time to melt down your kinda hard to find parts if it shorted due to a hard hit and battery slip.

Kinda waiting to see what you do that poor chassis...

you would think so klavy but ive been running softcases for 2 years now, havent had a problem yet. the fiero does run a hardcase though. that one needs it

Image

traxxas innovation

haven't butchered the lower srt chassis yet but i did use it as a drilling template... and a note pad

i got the lower chassis done, my internet and tv went dead (at&t ftw  ) so i couldnt update the thread but here y'all go. got the front bulk, servo mount, steering rack, and tranny holes drilled and countersunk. the tranny has holes for 4 m3 screws even though the srt only uses 2, im using all 4 (because i can )

Image

Image

next on the list
Image

i also burned the midnight oil to get all the lower assemblies done, ill have pictures tonight. all i need to do is cut the upper chassis, drill some holes, mount the battery, fab up the shock towers, and find an rx/tx to use. no biggie right? i think ill hold off on all of that though. i want to get the fiero started and maybe done too.

you and me both :?

im going to tie the tranny to the upper deck with turnbuckles so that much will be easy. im not sure how to brace the batter extension, i really dont want it to be free hanging. i think itll have to be tied in at the front, the motor mount gets in the way at the back.

ill have pictures up in a bit

monday night i was ready to call it quits and just never did. got all the lower assembly done. yesterday i started in on the fiero a little but i couldnt walk away from this, went to about 11:30. i cleaned up the monday night work tuesday afternoon.

so lets go through the tour 8)

front and rear shocks and suspension assemblies all mounted up
Image

this is the view most will see, its a good one too used bandit half shafts and a set of new outdrives. the output yolks are still the original steel ones from this car
Image

had to use a few different hinge pins in all 4 corners, in front its the only one thats noticeable, i think they are rc10gt front inner pins. had to shim them up as the tie bar didnt cut it.
Image

bringing the upper deck and tranny together was a bit of a brain teaser at first but a pair of turnbuckles did the trick, these are from this car, they are the rear camber links. i may be swapping one out for a [longer] sledgehammer steering link. its key that the upper deck and tranny are tied together to keep away any chassis flex. i really want to eliminate any chassis flex, it'll let me use those wacky shocks to their full
Image

back up front again, i had to change the spindle and steering knuckles, the other set was too far offset. i happened to have had a set of losi slider spindles i had previously modded to fit rc10/losi x series front wheels and slip into traxxas nitro rustler/srt steering knuckles. gave me the right offset and since i had previously modded those spindles it was a bolt on set. the bearings i used are flanged 3/16 x 5/16 x1/8 specifically from the rc10gt clutch bell. you can also see in the top center of the picture the losi xxt rear lower shock mount bracket i modded to fit inside the a-arm and the dubro cone washer thingy i used to space it
Image

i didnt notice it till tuesday but i had some binding in the rear carriers so i sicked the dremal on the carriers and wheels and got rid of all of that binding. took about 1mm off the face of the carrier to expose the bearing then chamfered the edge.
Image

servo is a quick little thing, have one in my blue eagle ls/trx1 hybrid. not too much torque though. its an old aristocraft/hitec hs300, have the specs written down somewhere :d
Image

also thought id mention that with exception to the servo and drag links all the other external turnbuckles are lunsford titanium. i think they are for the original rc10 or b2. the front and rear camber link rod ends are rpm and the steering link ends are stock ae sets from the gt'. also worth mentioning that i had to tap a small hole to mount the esc on/off switch. it was a regular screw but i was able to get it countersunk nicely.

so thats it for now

got the rear shock tower and the entire lower assembly done! battery tray is mounted, braces are done, rubber lizard is glued up!

Image

battery wing brace
Image

rear brace
Image

i curved the rear of the center brace to match the motor mount's curve so that it wont interfere with the motor
Image

shock tower! coated it in ca glue to keep away de-lamination and splitting, going to mimic that on the front tower and maybe the chassis too since i think im going to leave it red
