Anyone into the old Cox gas powered cars?

The place to go when it doesn't fit anywhere else.

Anyone into the old Cox gas powered cars?

Post by Diggley »

I'm not sure if this really fits into the RC car thing, but at the time I bought it off of the 'Bay it sort of did.

It was listed as a Cox radio controlled bug. I knew that Cox had produced an RC version of it's dune buggy towards the end of the production, and (like an idiot) thought this may have been a rare version w/the Bug body.

I really didn't care that much anyway, I had wanted a Cox Baja most of my life, so I figured a restoration project would be fun even if it was just for a shelfer. I think I only spent about $35.

It was a home made RC project that looked like it may have been done somewhere in the early 70's.

Has anyone seen one of these radios in awhile?:

Here's a few before restoration photos:

The hole in the back is where the antenna was mounted through.

I had several of the cox vw's and the dune buggies. I actually got ahold of a cox 2ch rc system from one of the early cars and did a conversion to the dune buggy. The conversion was a copy of an article in an old magazine from I think the late 60's(model airplane news? maybe)
I'll have to take a look at my picture archive to see if I can find any. I sold off all of my cox stuff a few years ago to raise money to race modern stuff. Wish I would have kept them as I had a NIB yellow VW body kit and some other nice parts as well.

I remember as a kid begging for one of these things...(purple dune buggy)..when I got one as a birthday present, I couldn't believe it. I think after what seemed like hours, I finally got it running..the thing was so LOUD and yet so slow. I was a bit disapointed. It wound up on the dresser as a giant model car. But it looked sooo cool.

I miss that thing.

Awhile later, a kid brought a yellow Bug into school, I thought it was the coolest thing I'd ever seen. I'm not sure why I didn't get one then......(of course, being a kid, I couldn't afford it)

I think it would be fun to make this one functional again, only w/electric power & a better chassis set up.

I still check out Ebay every so often, looking for a reasonably priced purple metalflake buggy.

Great looking bug and I've never seen a radio like that.

I never had a Cox car but did have a purple Cox control line pylon racer that I got for X-mas in the mid-70's.
I never got a chance to fly it as my dad wanted to see if it would glide.
He gave it a toss and the plane nose dived into the ground and broke the plastic motor mount.
That was the start/end of my airplane days

That scene belongs right in this series: the golden years

Sorry I laughed
