Length of Ultima shocks needed
What is the length of the front & rear shocks on a Ultima? Are they same as the Optima or Advance? Thanks in advance

Re: Length of Ultima shocks needed
yes, they are the same size, no matter if mounted in optima ultima, tomahawk ,advance or any. Red shocks were only available in short and long versions, same applies to platinum shocks.
Gold shocks born in 2 sizes and died with 3 sizes, the medium size was developed for front end of triumph and lazer zxr

Re: Length of Ultima shocks needed
As Jose said, there were 3 sizes for Gold shocks, but I wouldn't really call them small, medium & large. There was only one size for the rears (long) and 2 sizes for the fronts...and there's not much difference in the shock body lengths between those 2 versions of fronts, maybe 5mm or so. I had a bunch of Gold front shock bodies when I was choosing parts to be shipped & anodized for the Barney car, and was wondering if my eyes were fooling me, because one of them was a bit shorter than the others, but not by much.

Re: Length of Ultima shocks needed
hi, yes,you have reason, they are no much longer.
I called them medium because is like kyosho labeled them "Gold shocks (M)"

Good point, Jose. At least, if you still have the original packaging.

Re: Length of Ultima shocks needed
I have to point out that the Tomahawk red shocks are only 8mm in diameter. Turbo Scorpion, Assault and Advance are the same as Optima and others 10mm in diameter.

Re: Length of Ultima shocks needed
So with my Ultima build here: http://www.rc10talk.com/viewtopic.php?f=30&t=25523
I found that in order to use gold or platnium shocks I needed to use front shocks on the rear as well. The long version were to long. I guess I would of needed a turbo ultima rear shock tower to run long shocks? Maybe I have it screwed up but the ride height looks correct. I'm just a rc10/tamiya guy so bear with me

Re: Length of Ultima shocks needed
If the Ultima/Turbo Ultima was the same with regards to shock lengths as the Optima/Turbo Optima, you would indeed need Turbo shock towers to install the Gold shocks. I don't have Ultimas but that rear shock tower looks too short to me.transamman908 wrote:So with my Ultima build here: http://www.rc10talk.com/viewtopic.php?f=30&t=25523

To Lars :
Lars, I know that scorpions and tomahawks are your favourites, so if you tell that red shocks on tomahawk are 8mm, I trust in you, but it surprises me a lot as my 2 tomahawks uses the same red plastic upper spring clamp design than optima 10mm ones.
one of them is that black one that you adviced me to buy from germany a year ago, the second one was a red one that came from ebay canada 6 weeks ago.
waaait a minute, black is at home.....
.......just checked, mines are 10mm ones, perhaps early tomahawk came with 8mm shocks and scorpion style shock clamps??
my tomahawks are not early as boxart, they came with sand super tires instead of goodyear ones

Re: Length of Ultima shocks needed
After half hour searching for tomahawk pictures I can assure this:
the artbox tomahawk used 8mm red shocks and scorpion style spring clamps , so just the same shocks than scorpion, but red anodized.
I have found a lot of pictures of tomahawks with 8 and 10 mm red shocks, they are easy to tell apart, just see the upper eyelet , it has 8mm wide , if it is flat with the shock body, is an 8mm shock, 10mm ones have 10mm body but still 8mm at upper eyelet end, so a 1mm step is present between shock cylinder and eyelet.
there is a easier way , just see the spring clamp style, the screw is in totally different location.
as not only my tomahawks have 10mm ones, can we suppose that kyosho changed it at some stage?

The long one is the rear damper of an Optima and Optima pro
Do You have a picture of the Optima front bumper?
Thanks.

Re: Length of Ultima shocks needed
As Coelacanth wrote, You´ll need to use the Turbo Ultima rear shock mount, if You want to run the plantinium dampers. But imo it´s not recommendable to use platinium shocks on a light buggy as the Ultima. The shocks are nice but not as smooth as the gold shocks. Neither is the red shocks. Go for gold shocks if You´re going to run it.transamman908 wrote:So with my Ultima build here: http://www.rc10talk.com/viewtopic.php?f=30&t=25523
