Marui samurai gearbox is rough

Post by fristajlo »

My latest restoration project is a samurai, but I'm stuck at the gearbox assembly. Can't get it to turn smoothly. Everything is cleaned, in good shape and ballbearings are fitted. As soon as I try to tighten the screws that hold the casing together it pretty much seizes. At least the axle where the chain drive goes. Anyone had the same problem?

Are there any witness marks on the trans case to show what is rubbing. Are the bearings fully seated? Do all the bearings spin free in the case?

Try assembling the trans with only one component (i.e. diff) and see if it's tight, if not try another component (top shaft or idler).
I was old school - when old school wasn't cool !

Thanks for the input General! Got it working now. It was some bearings that fit over some small tubes (very tight fit) that seized when fitted without a little bit of margin sideways. Can't explain better, only have manual in Japanese so I don't know what the parts are called;) Thanks for pushing this along :)
