Wasp gearbox for Cougar?

Post by CAT3K »

I picked up these gearbox parts from ebay about a week ago. If I remember correctly this was a Wasp item, anyone know for sure? The gearbox wasn't complete, but I had the missing parts in my parts boxes, so I part assembled it to see how well it worked.

I think it's cool that someone decided to convert the Schumacher belt box to a 3 gear , but what a strange way to convert it. All the gears jammed on one side, and look at he size of those double bearings  I've got to assume it wasn't popular, I think this is only the second one I've seen.

Can't confirm, but fairly certain it is wasp. Also it looks waspish! Whisper gearbox or something? Saw it once before a few years back - a true gem!

Wow! What a find. I think that was sold by Wasp as a 'high torque conversion'.

Dats reeel nice. That deserves a car built around it. What are you going to do with it?

Agreed. Think i'd be polishing up a chassis and transmission for that. :)

It's a Wasp High Torque Drive.

I've got a couple of the original CAT ones, there's not many about as they sold for £120 back in the day. You can see the Cougar one is designed the way it is because they took the CAT HTD transmission and just removed the belt drive teeth and guide. Here's a picture of one of my CAT HTDs when I first got it, it's also got the Wasp slipper fitted.

Thanks for that, I thought it was Wasp. £120 for a gearbox in 1990! Considering the Cougar sold for £99 at the time, that would be like me buying an aftermarket gearbox costing £250 for my modern Cougar. I can't say I've come across an advert for it in my magazines. Was this gearbox marketed just for the Cougar, or maybe the Topcat too?

I think I will eventually have to find another Cougar to fit this to, but I have a few more projects ongoing that I'd like to get finished before I start another

oh, there were guys in my club who would regularly buy the new Schumacher kits, then spend about double the kit price on aftermarket parts.
didn't really seem to help them win anymore races though, but hey I liked buying those cars used when they were done with them ;)

Nice bit of kit !
