I've been meaning to comment on your build and how much effort you are putting into it. I'm surprised it didn't do better on the monthly contests. It should have one both times in my opinion. Good luck with the electronics!

Thanks Anthony, you certainly put a lot of effort into it as well These monthly contests are fun and well populated generally (except when Thumbs is not in) making it sometimes really difficult to just choose one car. I bet people favour first originality and this build is nothing about being original, second the completeness of it (with or without electronics...). Anyway it is what it is, just pure fun. It revives nicely the forum a bit and puts forward some very nice builds with great effort and dedication to real vintage stuff, something that is in a process of getting lost, even here, sometimes.

Getting back to our gauge story, thanks to Jason for the pics (I knew you would be quick on this one) and to the others for your contributions! I myself looked into the manual and there was nothing indeed Rod! I don't think Novak ever produced (well rebranded) 11gauge wires. I will probably go for a pack of modern 12 gauge wires as finding old ones might be next to impossible. There is probably really tiny differences in the markings but I can live with that I guess

The wires on my Novak HPc, the red is 14g, the blue and black are 12g. On my Novak M1 the wires are all 14g. Now, it's a later one with the fuse so i don't know if that effects anything.

Do you have any scrap pieces laying around that are marked and can match them up?

I'm not near my house in the next few days, but on the original worlds M1c that Cliff Lett gave me I am sure the wires were larger than 14g. You should be safe with 12g. I will check for you when I get home in a week or so! I have horded a few M1c's!

Stunning job so far. Esc I looked at other guys used around that event and a lot were 12g which is why I opted for that on my repro, yes my esc is with a fuse but did win a few Nationals so added it for the history.

Great looking job your doing. Outstanding craftsmanship. Just a quick question: Does anybody know if anyone is making this chassis set-up anymore? I'ld like to build a stealth car but the chassis is next to impossible to find, any help would be appreciated.

Ok surgery soldering and resto of the old Novak went fine. The wires were indeed 12 gauge but the silicon liner is nowadays a tad thicker so I gently dremelled the holes in the case and it's all fine.
Next is fabricating a lexan case for the receiver.

Spent some time today making the lexan case for the KO receiver out of an old storing box. The only pics of Masami's car equipped with electronics being really crappy, this is only a guess. Comparing the pic Jason provided on previous page with the actual naked KR285A tells me that it might not even be the correct receiver. There are two aligned white spots on the picture which cannot be found on the receiver I have. Maybe one day a good picture will arise... In the meantime this will do!







And finally thanks to Rod, I was able to complete the wing decals!

I wonder if there is an FM version of that 285 receiver (KR-285F)? That could be slight different internally.

I can't say I've ever seen another KO receiver that shape with the plugs in the end.

Still trying to figure out at best what Masami had as a receiver in 91 and how the case looked like, I took the following pictures:

- first one is a screenshot from this video:





I still can't really figure where the plugs and the antenna go out of the lexan case which looks very similar to the one he used at the '89 Worlds in Australia (see below). Also note the gear cover he actually used in Detroit in 91: the Japanese AE version with a large red plug and not the US non-ribbed version with a small black cap that is pictured in Steve Husting's book. Also not the white wing fins.

- the second one is a picture of the '89 Stealth in Australia with a picture of the internals of the KR-285A I have in the bottom for the sake of comparison. It is definitely the same one with the same electronics elements at the very same place. The lexan case is very similar to the one I made. I can probably build something much closer to the '89 clear case, just have to stumble on a similar clear box/existing packaging.
