LosiXX #2

Post by radioactivity »

This car won't be concours quality but it is in fairly nice condition.
Early pics as received...

The motor plate is probably the roughest part so I started there.

Then onto sanding... Only the rear portion seems really bad so I am trying a 2 tone anodize.

More sanding and polishing...

And the anodizing...

Do you do your own annodizing? That looks great!

And that was not the final polishing. To achieve a nice anodize the final polish must be nearly flawless.
This motor plate is not perfect but pretty nice.
Probably had at least 4 or more hours of sanding/polishing, probably far more.
Then another hour or two of prep before anodizing.
In the ano bath for 2 hours.
In the dye bath for 30 min.
In the nickel acetate sealant for 30 min.
Finally 30 min cleaning, a light buff and light oiling.

Yep.
I did not go to deeply into the process 'cause it is mostly covered here https://www.rc10talk.com/viewtopic.php?f=30&t=46027
It took me a lot of reading and experimentation and it can be a bit wordy to tell the whole story.
Still trying to learn every time I try.

Amazing result! I have a LOT of parts waiting to go to the anodizer. A lot of them are pieces I have already stripped, and need polishing. You are absolutely right - the polish job determines the anodize result. I really don't enjoy polishing, so it's been very easy to put off sending my parts to the anodizer, lol.

Thanks Lavigna

I initially tried to find a local anodizer but failed. Every one wants to do quantity not quality one offs. Even tried gunsmiths for a hook up, to no avail. Paintball guys might know, haven't tried them.
Now if I had something like 6 Baldor pedestal mounted buffing wheels I could cut the polishing time down a lot. And have a huge mess going on.
Oh well I got time and some patience. I'll stay small scale.

I had been collecting a few replacement parts for a while.
The bumper and rear pivot support were pretty torn up.

Went ahead and completely cleaned everything.

Got a Boki body and gear cover, new RPM ball ends, wheels , wheel covers and tires.

The Boki body turned out pretty nice.
Box art-ish but that Faspearl blue spoke to me after the motor plate was anodized.
