People contacting me directly thru email while no post here?

Post by silvertriple »

Hi
Not sure I'm the only one for which it happens, but from time to time I get some mail from "members" in this forum asking for help or for parts... What actually bugs me is that when I check the profile, the guys don't have a single post here, they did not even bothered to present themselves. Not a single post, which means the guy just connected to the forum to contact a bunch of people (probably i'm not the only one in this case) to see if he can borrow parts from someone.
As a consequence, I'm tempted to remove the possibility of contacting me by mail from the forums...
Maybe it would make sense to have the possibility to contact member by emails only after a certain number of posts like it is for the BST section?

In anycase : I really like to help people. But I definitely prefer to help people who participate and bring something for the community than people who just suck blood from it...

Am I the only one in this situation?

regards,
Marc

I’ve been on this forum for 12 yrs, I’ve yet to have anyone email me directly. Are the people trying to scam you out of stuff?

Go to your control panel. Under board preferences, there is the option for members to email you. Turn it off.
Always looking for new and interesting ways to waste money.

I just changed it. Not sure if I ever paid attention to this before...

I have never had an email from a member here either, not one that I was not expecting anyway. Are you referring to a direct message?

If not, is it possible that your email addy is in a post somewhere on the board?

Report the user name to Admin and they can look into it as well.

This is the first time I've been made aware of it happening. I'd venture a guess that it's not a common occurrence. Nevertheless though, it shouldn't happen at all if it can be helped. I'll look into the settings to see if there's one for disallowing members with no posts from contacting others via email.

EDIT: There's no way to disallow members with zero posts from emailing others BUT there's a workaround. I can disable member groups from being able to email others. Those with 0-29 posts fall into the 'Regular Members' group, so I simply disabled that groups ability to send emails to other members. Problem solved.
