Will brushless kill brushed?

I read a similar thread in another forum, but value the opinions in this forum more. How long do you give brushed motors? I personally hope they stick around forever. I love playing around with the tuning. Brushes, springs etc... It's always amazed me what a difference you can make. Brushless is big power and maintenance free, but where's the love??

as long as tamiya keeps putting silver can 540s in their kits, you will have brushed motors.

question is, how long will brushed motors survive in racing circles? i feel they (as a group) will convert to brushless (100%) before bashers do.

I have already converted most my racers to brushless (except the slash, went brushless, pulled it and went back to brushed), I plan on all my vintage cars running brushless.

If the price of brusless keeps coming down I think everyone will change? but not everyone can afford a Brushless?

for my part i love brushless been runing mamba max for 2 years now and it is perfect love the power maintenance free programable esc just have to go with the new technology it is amazing

Well, I don't want to be too drastic.. but I always hated having to tear down a motor after every run (almost), examining the comm, cutting it...
So welcome brushless!!!
To be honest you can tune brushless motors also, many have the timing setting, and several settings are allowed by the ESC.
Then think about today's Lipos, allowing looong runtimes even with high power motors: how critical would be running for 10 minutes a 10 turn brushed motor in a 4wd buggy?
You would be almost sure to burn the comm every time...
I currently run brushed only on my touring (which I use only indoor in wintertime) and my crawler...

One of the reasons I got out of racing for a while was all the motor maintenance! Especially stock classes. Pull the motor after every run, clean it out, oil the bushings, play with brushes, replace the brushes, com drops, speed oil this and that.....just got tiring.....

I switched to Mod just as the motor care was less critical.

Cost wise, you can get Novak Havoc sensored setups for 139$

They will have different turn motors out soon. That's like 80$ for a ESC & 60$ for a Mod motor.....sounds about like it used to, even 15-20 years ago.....

I welcome the brushless trend. I used to need at least one full day before to prep two cars for race day, much of it gluing, truing, and balancing tires. Now I'm lucky to get an hour the night before to get my car ready, so the plug n play motors are a blessing.

I think it's more than a trend. It's just a newer version of the electric motor.

Who knows but I picked up a steal on the Peak Vantage brushed motors. $20 a pop (down from $95 each ) and I grabbed 5 of them. You can still get a few from Stormer. That should get me through a few racing seasons and at the club level its all driving

I don't shop around much anymore, just look for what I need. How's the brushed selection? Is it dwindling? I'm guessing so( ), but maybe I'll be pleasantly surprised. I ran thru several million pages of brushed motors the other day just to gauge interest. Crawlers are definitely a high draw, but I want more than 55t motors to stay strong.

After rebuilding a couple of my old brushed motors, I'd have to say brushless is the way to go. Soldering on those blasted capacitors and wires, stripping everything down to clean them up, and all that jazz is a major PITA. Bring on affordable brushless!

Brushless prices are dropping and like has been stated the maintenance and the new batteries are killing the brushed motors. I just found this out. My 10 turn Orion gave up the ghost after running a lipo. Melted the endbell repaired it and it only lasted two more runs and finally fizzled out. Now it just shoots sparks off the comm. Come on brushless.

Seriously? Your motor doesn't know the difference between a LiPo and a NiCd battery. Voltage is voltage. End of story.


The LiPo didn't destroy your motor.
