Re: 6 Gear transmission build tips??
The wheels will only turn in different directions when the spur gear is held in place by...and since your motor isn't in, and the spur isn't being held stationary by the pinion, you'll have to hold the spur with your finger while you spin the wheels.Dave145 wrote:Ok no it doesn't do that. If I spin the left wheel, nothing happens to the right wheel or the spur. I'll check the diff tomorrow.
Re: 6 Gear transmission build tips??
okay here are some pictures of both the transmission "lower half" and the differential. I took a short video of me twisting the diff in my hands and it appeared to work fine...
On another note, what would happen if I took a dremel with a wire wheel to those metal gears to try and flush the dirt and stuff out of them?

Oh and @ Asso_man!: I followed the link to the Jim Halsey Link and found that page #9 is missing. Can you re post page #9 there or just post it here? Otherwise that looks pretty helpful.
Re: 6 Gear transmission build tips??
Why? There is excess dirty oil on it that makes it look like the teeth are munched. I can see that on the drive gear. My bearings are pretty bad and wobble a bit.
Re: 6 Gear transmission build tips??
I'll post pictures of both idlers. Can I use a wire wheel to get all the dirt and crap out of the teeth? The dirt seems pretty ground In.
Re: 6 Gear transmission build tips??
Sorry for the crappy pictures, they're from my cellphone and they are resized (smaller) so I could post them. They were a lot clearer before the resize. Anyway, it does look like they've got quite a few miles on them and are slightly damaged. Any chance of repairing them with a dremel?

Re: 6 Gear transmission build tips??
I dunno....that thrust washer on the right looks like a standard washer and is much thinner than the one on the right....or am I seeing it wrong?
Re: 6 Gear transmission build tips??
No its much smaller. I've bought 2 six gear transmissions and neither of them have had that right washer. That was just the one I could find in my toolbox. I'll check the hardware store this afternoon for one that might fit.

Re: 6 Gear transmission build tips??
those are a specialty washer. they are hardened. you really need to use the correct washers for it to work properly.
Re: 6 Gear transmission build tips??
Looks like I've got to go find one then. Why is it that neither of the 6 gear trannys I've bought came with that washer? Are they just that easy to lose or were they taken out for some reason?

Re: 6 Gear transmission build tips??
I am missing one on a 6 gear I have as well. Just have had bigger priority stuff. But yeah....with that washer being thin the Teflon bushing is probably being crushed and the diff can't work without that thrust being tight
