6-gear tips and tricks manual

Post by orangemazda »

Guys,

Wasn’t there a car action article or maybe a booklet written by a prominent racer back in the day on making the 6-gear badass?
I seem to remember something like that but can’t remember exactly. Anybody already post it on this site?

The Jim Halsey's Tranny Tips is online as a PDF but I can't convert to Jpeg to post
Seems there was also Build your 6gear with Jim Halsey ( https://www.rc10talk.com/viewtopic.php?t=3748 ) but I can't see the images.
Also ( https://www.rc10talk.com/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=8834 )
Hope that helps.

Don’t forget the Winning Edge video as well. About half way through Jim talks about the trans a little

Plus it’s just good watching 8)

I have also been adding an extra bearing on the top shaft.
I put it on the inside of the 6605 bearing adapter. A little more stability on the top shaft and acts as a spacer to help remove endplay in top shaft.
I've also been using the outdrive bearing mod, adding a bearing where the original 6633 felt is positioned.
All bearings degreased and then oiled.
At one time fewer bearings (less friction) was a big deal. 4 minutes with 1200-1400 mah was tough. No longer.
My recent trans have 11 bearings and spin easily.
Keeping a good alignment at the most critical stress points, I feel, outweighs the slight frictional losses.
Just my take.

Oh yeah...

And after spending the requesite 4 hours or more, probably more, "perfecting" a 6gear take an air gun and spin the heck out of the trans by spinning the spur gear.
Then dissasemble clean the bearings and case, some grease will still sling out of the bearings, re-oil and do it over and over. Also for 3 gear builds.
This will help break in and seat the gears.
