Marui Hunter - My first buggy... Found one to restore :-) - and a Galaxy RS too :)

Just thinking now that I need to add a pivot somewhere on the roll cage, so I can open the body to place the battery pack. I need to think more about this (I'll get to this later).
In the meantime, I'll need to get the box with the Galaxy parts so I can model the two last cars of the family...

A first render to share on this project... It's not accurate, as I did not model the MSC, RX and other details which I did not removed such as the roll bar, driver an radio lid (and colors maybe off as well, plus the fact that putting two times the same car in doesn't really help to have it in good resolution).

I really like what you did to modify the body shape , the undercut on the sides is something that the Rough Rider body style really needs , very nice work .

I may have added some over-engineering into the mix as well : when you look at the rough rider body, it is actually super simple to redesign in cad and to modify it the way you want (after all, it's mainly pannels assembled together)... So that's something that could be ultimately done easily to make a custom body... And if this fuels some ideas on your side, don't hesitate, it is part of the reasons I post those elements all around the web

Finally found the motivation to grab the Galaxy parts...

I started to model the Rollcage support


Then the bumper...


Then the roll cage... It's a bit of work, as to define the pipes, you need first to define the different plans you are going to work on... Soon, you have the overall structure...


Then using the same plans, and projections of the roll cage definition, it is quite easy to define the details additions...


And the roll cage is done...
Remains to do:
- shocks
- front shock hook extension
- rear shock hook extension
- Bathtub cover / 3 parts.

At some point, I started to assemble the Galaxy with all the parts... I will need to work the 360 RS as well, as otherwise my Galaxy would not be perfect...


And also added the wheels... (I just added a set of tires in the same file, but positioned differently so this time it is Galaxy which is visible on the sides walls)

NB : the shocks should be really on pivot balls accordingly to the way the chassis is defined. There is about .5 mm of play in the shock holes diameter, and nylon flex to allow the mount in real )

The I started to work out the bathtub cover. I suspected a 1.5 mm issue somewhere, that allowed me to identify easily where and that means my chassis may be testable...


The frontpart of the bathtub cover is the complex part. It required the usage of boolean quite extensively, combined with some surfaces and other tricks...


Once that was done, only remains the wing...


And the wing was added shortly after...

And the Galaxy RS was also added to the stable...

I added the stickers on the roll cage and wing, and we have the Galaxy RS complete!


For the Galaxy, there is more work to do, as it has some very distinctive features
- red parts, done
- silver rims, done
- Marui 360 RS (which I still need to model) - still to work out
- a diode to remove the need of the radio battery pack : hidden in the bath tub with the missing electronics
- number pannels : I had some in my stuff, it was easy to model anyway (and it will be easy to reproduce)
I still need to model the Marui 360 RS, but here is the car with the stickers and number pannels

And yes, @Dadio ,I added a (wireless) battery pack

The last key CAD activity on this leg of the project was the Marui 360 RS. The motor is a 550 type, with open end bell. For the small story, I have two of them sitting on my desk, and one of them have a damaged endbell (probably due to overheating). I intended to print an end bell to replace it at some point, and tehrefore I had to tear down partly one of those motors. The one I tore down came with a car, and it was in a pot with screws... It was a good idea to open it as there was a screw inside the motor cage. And to be perfectly honest, I cheated with the brush springs...


I added it to the car right after the model was done


But it was still missing something. I mentioned there was only the sticker missing, and my friend Ryo was super nice to send me the required pic.



And here is the Galaxy completed....

Marui Hunter is on the program this week-end...

I did proceed yesterday evenning with some test prints to validate the chassis... While modeling the Galaxy, I identified where was the 1.5mm issue I was suspicious about.
I did a cut of the front area, added a marker for the bodymount position and a 15 mins print to check the chassis length. And it appear to be now a 100% match on this area.


I aso printed a part of the front end in order to check the recess for the front train support structure. It works perfectly.


Whlie there I also check arms positionning and bumper holes and they are perfect.


The chassis is now validated. I will rework a certain number of things to finalise the CAD part of this project:

• Hunter Prototype roll cage : I want to do some changes, the idea behind is that the part will be permanently fixed to the chassis with the wing, while the body will be installed on top of it, therefore it will include a body mount

• Hunter Bodyshell. While I had an initial plan to get the bodyshell printed in ABS, the idea is slightly changed as the target will be to get a lexan bodyshell. As matter of fact, I had a lot of thinking about the bodyshell and want to redo it in a different way

• Rear gear cover. It is already planed to be in multiple parts, but I did not finalise it on the fixation side. The idea is to get the chrome parts being painted separately for a better finish

• Last, I want to do a motor cover working for the 540 motor (there is some demand for it)

At the end the target is to work all of this over the week-end so I can plan for prints over the next month. My printed car of the year is likely going to be a Hunter prototype...

The modification made on the chassis during the Galaxy correction had an impact on multiple parts, so I did a lot of checks. And few parts required revisions... I've managed quite a few of them already, but not all of them yet.

I then focused to finalise the rear cover. It will work with both 540 and the custom 380 motor mount. The part look like before, but it is in 5 parts. which should ease the paint of the chrome parts...

2 M3x8 and one M3x6 are used to attach the part together... The top holes were changed to fit M3 screws as well later on.


Then I started to work on the Prototype motor cover, to fit a 540 Motor in. And that where I had some very confused error messages. Confusion360 as would say Dadio


I stopped and restarted Fusion 360 and restarted the motor cover from scratch. I had to simplify a bit as I need to keep it contained in a given volume in order to fit around the motor and under the bodyshell...


Here is the front side... I may add a few details later on, once the cap will be done


The fit will be tight on both side (motor and bodyshell). The bodyshell here is intended as basis for a mold, so this is the inside face we see, so it should be fine in real with the flex of the lexan...

As expected, it should require a bit of rework on the lateral body cut


Tomorrow, the focus will move to the roll cage and bodyshell for the prototype...

I made some test prints of the motor cover. I wanted to be sure it can be mounted on a car with the motor in...

I printed the parts for exhaust and airboxes in white so we can clearly see a color separation for the tests...


Then the motor cover and the rest of the rear cover...


I may have been too quick launching a print as the top part of the moto cover was not thick enough, and as a result it separated with the supports. I glued it so it's workable... In any case, the target for those parts is not really FDM...


Here is rear cover assembled...


And here is on a Galaxy chassis (which was easier to pull as the box is easily accesible currently). The part won't be compatible with the Galaxy due to the shock towers and that's not really a surprise... The motor is the Marui 360RS, too long for this, but a regular 540 silver can will work.


Some rework is required because the room for cables is too tight. A little revision will be made and that should be good to go...
