Re: Ultima Scale VW Baja Project...Under Construction
"Yellow looks right on there. Nice work."
"Definitely lookin' better in yellow! I like how close it looks to the full-scale bug."
"It looks nicer in yellow, more like a racer."
Thanks guys!
I can't say enough about Krylon Fusion paint..it works great on plastic & lexan without glossing it up too much.
...and yes, I love the bright yellow too!..it looks completely different!

Re: Ultima Scale VW Baja Project...Under Construction
I love Krylon Fusion for Plastic as well. It's supposed to bond to plastics & vinyl and in that way, works more like a dye than a paint. Lots of people use it to restore their interior auto parts. I got great results restoring grimy, stained, paint-oversprayed old white vinyl & plastic parts from my Charger, re-doing them black. They come out with just the right amount of semi-gloss (though the pics make them appear more glossy due to the camera flash).Diggley wrote:I can't say enough about Krylon Fusion paint..it works great on plastic & lexan without glossing it up too much.

I love to see pics of the 1/1 Charger when it's done!Coelacanth wrote:I love Krylon Fusion for Plastic as well. It's (Fusion) good stuff, but it takes more a few coats of yellow to cover all the black...which is great, because it allows for a much thinner & more scale paint job. I think it's got at least half a dozen coats (or more) & all the bodylines are still crisp & clean.
After letting it sit for a few weeks, I noticed it needed a few more coats. (slight shading difference between the lexan nose & the hard shell body) I plan to give it one more light wet sand and de-nib in between the last few coats. Hopefully once that's done, I add all the weather stripping & misc. details.

Re: Ultima Scale VW Baja Project...Under Construction
Decided to bail on the interior for the http://www.rc10talk.com/viewtopic.php?f=33&t=12952 ("I have an idea") project, and swap it over to the Baja. Since both cars were based on Ultima Chassis' it wouldn't be a problem. The Cox Baja Bug's interior looks WAY better in this, and actually appears to be closer to 1/10th scale in the Monster Beetle's shell. While I was at it, I decapitated one of the Viper's (Kyosho boat) driver's heads and Frankenstein'd it to an old Monster Beetle driver's torso....Dirty cousin to the Stig anyone?
It'll continue to be a project for awhile...or at least until it reaches my standard of where I think it should be...Since it'll be a functional/display only car, I will try to add more detail in between other projects.
I still plan to sand a few more minor blemishes out of it and hit it with another several coats of Fusion yellow. (hence why none of the window & trim detail hasn't been done yet...Maybe carpet & a cage later?
I'm hoping for a few more good weekends before winter hits, so I can finally get a few good beach shots (photos) of the buggy and the B2 Baja: http://www.rc10talk.com/viewtopic.php?f=35&t=8919&hilit=rc10b2.5+baja in action. I'd like to send a shot of the buggy into Car Action. The Manx will look fanatstic throwing up a few rooster tails! The sand will be a cool background for this one too.

New bling arrived in the mail today.
Now to decide if it's going on the 'Scorcher or the Ultima project...

Re: Ultima Scale VW Baja Project...Under Construction
Cool build -
I´d say, keep the alloy dash for Scorcher.
The interior You´ve got on the Ultima doesn´t need bling.

Re: Ultima Scale VW Baja Project...Under Construction
Hmmm,
I may have stumbled upon a cool idea for Ultima owners..
While I love the way the Proline Rough Rider wheels/Aluminum wheel halves look, I'm not exactly thrilled with the off-center bore on one of the ancient wheels..The RF wheel wobbles..badly.
They are a bit difficult to find these days...
So, I started looking through the parts stash and pulled out the RPM front Slash spindle combo..
It looks like since the Slash uses 12mm hubs, it would be easy to bolt up most any kind of modern wheel...as a bonus, it fits the old Tamiya standard rear wheel hub...which kinda looks like a VW brake drum...which will now bolt up directly to the wheel.
I haven't checked the suspension geometry yet, but I have a feeling this might work with a little modification..

Re: Ultima Scale VW Baja Project...Under Construction
It look like the mod shortens the wheelbase by about an 1/8" or so and lowers the front by about the same. It narrows the track width by a fraction.
It doesn't appear to effect the geometry by much.

I love your range of models! I bet they look really cool on display! You have got me thinking about doing something similar on my new RC10 build. Really love it.
