Post by bandit2026 »

What kind of car? I assume you mean a gear diff? Did he use a left-handed wrench to do this also?

I might be a couple short of a full gearset, but if there are 4 bevel or "spider" gears or whatever we're calling them..if you removed two opposite each other, there would be less rotating mass and maybe enough strength in those remaining two gears to handle it all?

This dude might be yanking your chain though.

I should not have posted this because after I read it, I sound like an idiot. I bet LTO_Dave would know a real answer.
Hope you're doin' something fun.

"faster" means different things to different people.

In 2wd offroad it's sometimes done these days to increase the amount of oil in the diff, which theoretically gives a more consistent feel throughout the run. When I tried it I couldn't feel anything different

I hear that 10Talk member @THEYTOOKMYTHUMB is an expert on trans gear.... he'd be the guy to ask.

Thanks to those who replied. Only thing I could figure less rotating mass down straight and less friction in turns.

yeah, it would possibly be more efficient if the diff assembly is stable with just two planet gears instead of 4. less chance for gear mesh to create friction, but a too loose diff is also an opportunity to lose traction. one wheel peel.
