Need help identifying aluminum roll cage??

Post by aip47-2008 »

Got this from my LHS with an RCH header card that was attached, but turned inside out and the # 1710 hand written on it! I thought maybe it might be for an SRB, but I don't really know what it's for. :!: :?: :?:

It's definitely RCH as it has the holes for their monoshock system. My guess would be for a superchamp gear case

I have a similar cage that mounts differently, but also has markings for the same holes your talking about.

The nylon cage will definetly fit the sand scorcher/rough rider chassis. Your aluminum one is a mystery. Maybe it bolts to another aftermarket piece that would bolt to the back of an SRB chassis

Maybe some chassis plate or other combo. Also mounts from the bottom front part of the cage. :?:

Those holes on the bottom line up perfectly with the plate that holds the MIP trailing arm mounts.

Jim the rear holes fit right up on the outside of the rear bumper bar. Knowing the Super Champ backwards and forwards like I do (note my screen name) the allum cage is for the Champ. I have one exactly like it that came from JG, and I bought it myself with my hard earned allowance money when I was 13 (I remember it as well as a replacement piece of solid bar (ie the replacement rear bumper) and still have the remnants. I got right off their parts list flyer of that time (1982-83).
Yours could have come with an RCH tag, as I believe the guy(s) bending and welding those cages BID could have been wholesaling them to a few different shops. and were designing to fit with the different mods like RCH or Race Prep's mono-shock setups or MIP's trailing arms.

It doesn't work as well with the stock rear bumper unless you get longer bolts to reach into the U shaped bracket on the back of the gear box.

Thanks for all of the fantastic information! :D There is always a plethora of knowledge within the great members here on RC10Talk. Wish I could use this roll cage, but I haven't owned a Tamiya since 85/86. I will more than likely have it up for auction soon.

Where did you get the JG Mfg. ad? Nice work! Sure would be nice to have some sort of reference material for older JG products. I still have some JG items with ? marks as to there history.

While we're on the subject of the Super Champ, What does the FS stand for on the back? I owned one in the mid to late 90's and asked around at the time but nobody could tell me.

It just shows how ahead of it's time the Super Champ is..... the FS stands for "Fooly Sik"....

Nah, I used to know what it meant.... something to do with the Funky Suspension or similar...
