35v capacitor too large?

Post by tim.sanderson »

My Spektrum 6040 servos cause my ESCs/servos to go wacky due to too high a voltage draw. (my particular receivers are known to have this problem) In my RB5 I use a 700uf/10v Spektrum capacitor to eliminate the stutters. My TC will be using the same type of servo in it, and I'll need another cap to do the same thing. I've got this 1000uf/35v I found in an old toolbox.

Can I use this to do the same job, or will the higher voltage rating of this cap be a risk to my system? Or will the lower voltage that comes out of my receiver not charge the capacitor past 6 or 7 volts?

no issue other than physical size. if you can handle that, you should have no issues.

electrolytics have a maximum safe working voltage, which in this case is 35vdc.

Note: using an excessivelly large capacitor can cause issues as well. However in this case I think you should be fine. You should always try to get as close to the size required as possible.

You could always run a separate higher amperage UBEC. Quite a common thing to do with planes and helis to eliminate brownouts/glitching/voltage fluctuations.

If you do, make sure you remove the red wire on the esc plug (that goes into the receiver).
