Are those Panasonic purple labels?
Good buy, luckily NiCd's have a good chance of still being good after all these years.

I'd be surprised if this is for running purposes... more like display stuff

Re: my large sanyo battery buy!
NiCd's dont mind a deep discharge. In the old days we used to dead short the packs, or use battery bugs. The likelihood of the packs responding and coming back to life after a couple of cycles is high.
NiMh's dont like being fully discharged or left in a discharged state, so the chances of them coming back are low.
If the packs were good I'd run em'

I also think for display purpose. Some Sanyo cells as 1400SCR and 1700SCRC still work quite good after long time but the high capacity cells as 1700SCE or Panasonics won´t work anymore quite often. I was throwing away a lot of old batteries some years ago.

Re: my large sanyo battery buy!
True for most NiMh cells but there was a very special Sanyo cell during the Sanyo 3000 area made for industrial purpose. From what I remember this was about 2300 mAh capacity, just green heatshrink without any printing. This NiMh of course had less capacity than the 3000 but had incredible low resistance and high punch. Also was acting like a NiCd SCR cell and wanted being treated as this. Perfect for stock racing. I have to look if I still have one pack laying around.lil_general_lee wrote:NiMh's dont like being fully discharged or left in a discharged state, so the chances of them coming back are low.

Re: my large sanyo battery buy!
Thats another good reason why NiCd's were great, you could punish the snot out of them and they didn't care. Recharge and recharge again and again. Zap them every now and again to break up the cell crystalization, they were bullet proof.
Of course newer battery technology is better but they were good days. Ask anyone today what a NiCd is and I bet 90% wouldn't know.

Re: my large sanyo battery buy!
they will "work", ie the car will move forward, just like a Futaba S148 "works" to steer a car... they won't be "dead" like some of the earlier NiMH (note some of the later nimh like gp3300 are even less sensitive to "beating the snot out of them") get after just 2 years.
But don't expect them to (a) perform like if it was 1987 and (b) let alone work 50% as well as any of today's packs, even the cheapest.

I don't think anyone would expect them to perform as good as when they were fresh. With a bit of cycling and maintenance you could get them to perform quite well I'd think, especially if you tore the packs apart and matched the cells.

I have a large lot of old Nicads too. With the power available in Lipo batteries now days the old cells just can't compete, that's advancement in technology for you
. Still, the old sub-c cells look awesome and those of mine I have charged and used are working ok. I was suprised they just worked at all.

Re: my large sanyo battery buy!
It is a shame modern Lipos are such dull block like shapes. It would have been fun to put old school yellow heat shrink wraps on top of modern cells - if they were the same shape. Hopefully future batteries will go back to cell format.

Re: my large sanyo battery buy!
It really is an entitrely different thing now days from back when I first started racing in the 80's. Although much was out of my budget as a kid I would drool over all the gear back then. Whilst I do value the advancements in r/c and appreciate better technologies I still feel that r/c doesn't quite have the same soul as it once did. Sure the ease of what we have now makes sense and makes for a more relaxed feel in the pits but remember when you had to discharge batteries and have them peak right before your race..

That would look awesome, modern lipos with a vintage label. I used to like building batteries, those days are gone.
All of my Sanyo 2000's are toast
they've all leaked a bit from the vents so they are destined for the bin.

Re: my large sanyo battery buy!
Before you bin any old cells I'd carefully remove the yellow shrinks, just in case they can be used in future. You never know what shape future cells may be. You could run a scalpel down one side of the shrink to reomve them.

Re: my large sanyo battery buy!
As a racer, I have binned MANY pack of nicds in the late 90's and early 00's... simply because they were, well, done... either on runtime, or on voltage, or in many case both (and IR). And I was taking care of my stuff, using the right gear, maintenance routines (whether cycling, dead-shorting when appropriate, storage conditions, ...). And still, they were dead enough to go the bin....
I thought I was wearing rose-tinted glasses, but looks like some members' are even rosier
Paul
(PS: and don't get me started on how I should NOT have binned them so I could have them on display in my shelf cars today, ok???
