I have this kyosho lemans gold 480 motor in my gold shelfer and it is dog slow (tested running around the basement with a fresh nimh pack). The guy I bought it from replaced a bunch of internal parts and gave me the header cards to prove it, but I don't know if he just put it back together without any setup or tweaking.
First, dumb question, how do I begin, ie loosen some screws on the can or something?

Re: Setting modified brushed motor timing?
Loosen the endbell screws and rotate endbell counter clockwise to advance timing. Aprox 1mm of movement equals about 1 degree of timing- no more than 12 deg ever-
Probably non seated brushes, soft springs or the notoriously crappy NiMh packs that have weeks for shelf life

Re: Setting modified brushed motor timing?
You may have resolved this already, but if the problem continues try hooking the motor directly to charged NIMH pack and see if it sounds funky or slow. You can tell loads about a motor just by listening to it and feeling how hard it jumps in your hand. I use an old Protech charger set to 6 cell charge to tune brushed motors. I'm sure no one recommends this, but I've done it since I was a kid and have never had any issues. It also tells you amp draw under zero load, but I don't think that really proves very much. I'm no electronics expert though. In fact, I'm not an expert on anything now that I think about it.
