Strange motor issue.

Post by daniels9424cs »

Alright, this newest problem is my motor, a reedy radon 19t (I think). My issue is that the motor doesn't run till you push the end of the shaft with the pinion. This motor is non-rebuildable so taking it apart to do anything is a real PITA. It looks like the brushes are making good contact with the comm and the brushes look fairly clean. The motor is pretty new which has me even more confused as to the problem, the shaft has probably around 1/8" of play in, probably less just a guess. Tried dipping the motor in water to "clean" inside but that gave zero improvement. The symptoms leading up to this was a short loss of power then no go.

probably have a winding shorted. can tell much without taking it apart; unfortunately, a shorted winding is also hard to see even if you can take it apart because it could be in the windings internally.

Think I found the issue the comm was filthy dirty in a ring. some q-tips down the brush holders seemed to clear it up.

Make sure your brushes move freely in the brush hoods. -Jeff

if its the motor im thinking about it has two metal tabs on each side of the can almost like the old marbuchi. If you take a small (i meen small)flat head you can pry those tabs out than the whole end bell will come off sounds like a wind like stated earler but it also could be the phalermic (<--sp?) washer on top of the com that could be gone and you could be arcing past the comm to the hood, aslo could be a magnet see if they arnt moving in the can,and last but not to be over looked look at your shunt wires ,i have had some to looked and felt like they were attached but were only holding on by few single wires

If you want to take it apart just hit the shaft on a solid piece of concrete so that the armature pops straight up. The tabs will give easily without scratches or damage and you can just carefully press them back in place with a flat head screwdriver. Also a super thin brass washer at each end will hide bearings... or that's what I use to hear.

lol so true on the can pop. i did that one time on a real finicky motor and broke the epoxy on my comm
but the can pop works ,i also heard that if you stuff some track dirt in you end bell bushing (bearing) when the call it up there to tech works to,at least thats what i heard never tried it are anything

Yes. These washers are made using Phenolic resin. Great electrical insulation and heat resistant properties. -Jeff
